❄️ Sanilac County Winter Weather & Carbon Monoxide Safety Alert ❄️
👀 Heads up, Sanilac County! The National Weather Service has winter storm watches and conditions expected this week — including lake-effect snow, gusty winds, and colder temperatures that could make travel hazardous. Snow totals may reach several inches with strong winds and blowing snow possible during midweek.
❄️ Winter Weather Safety Tips
• Stay updated on weather alerts from NWS and local officials.
• Limit travel during snow and wind — roads may become slick with blowing snow.
• If you must drive, keep an emergency winter kit in your vehicle (blankets, food, water, flashlight, phone charger).
• Dress warmly in layers, hats, gloves, and waterproof boots — extreme cold increases the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
• Clear snow and ice from walkways and driveways to prevent falls.
🔥 Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety — ‘Invisible, Deadly, Preventable’
As winter weather continues, we expect more use of heating systems, generators, fireplaces, and space heaters. Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless — you can’t see or smell it, but it can be deadly.
🚨 CO Safety Tips
✔ Install battery-operated CO detectors on every level of your home and near sleeping areas — test them monthly.
✔ Never operate generators, grills, or fuel-burning heaters indoors or in attached garages or enclosed/semi-enclosed spaces.
✔ Have heating systems and fuel-burning appliances professionally inspected each year.
✔ If your CO alarm sounds or you feel symptoms (headache, dizziness, nausea), get outside immediately and call 911.
❤️ Look out for your neighbors:
Check on older adults, individuals with disabilities, and anyone who may need help preparing for cold weather.
📍 Stay safe, stay warm, and stay informed with the latest from local weather services and public health officials!
