A mother’s love is second to none.

A mother’s love is second to none.

When you open your mouth to judge a mother, bite your tongue first.
Pregnancy hurts.
Birth hurts.
Breastfeeding hurts
Watching your baby cry hurts
Not sleeping well, it hurts.
Serving everyone and being the last hurts.
Not having time for yourself - hurts.

The mother needs help, not to be criticized,
she needs love and not to be judged,
she takes care of everyone, but she needs to take care of herself as well.
Motherhood is not as gentle as it seems, motherhood is beautiful, yes, but it is very difficult.
What's beautiful is the love that a mother has for her child, that love is capable of enduring everything!! ️

"They tell us how to grow a baby. What to eat.
What not to eat. What vitamins to take and what bras to buy. Allll the prenatal yoga moves to do.

But they forget to tell us how to put ourselves back together once that baby is born.
They forget to tell us how we might feel like we’re drifting.
Afloat. Alone. On a life raft with leaky breasts and sore stitches and a tiny little being dependent upon us for survival.
They forget to tell us how weird and wild it feels to have loose organs shifting about inside of us. How there will be so much softness still.

I get it. You don’t want to startle us. You don’t want us to be scared about what’s ahead.
But….a little heads up would be helpful
We’re brave enough for the truth.
And those things you find so scary- loose skin and leaky breasts and big feelings- we might just be bold enough to welcome them.
To see the beauty there.

So here’s the truth mama-
Your pelvic floor will probably need work and attention. You’ll have to put in some effort to regain that muscle strength, no matter how gentle your birth. Your breasts and belly will probably never be the same. Love them anyway. Love than more than before!! Celebrate them! Buy bras that make you feel sexy. Then move on.

Your identity and sense of self will change radically. Buckle up for the ride. You’ve got this. Your partnership and friendships and general relationship with the outside world might feel foreign for awhile. Or forever. Those relationships might crack and break under the weight of new parenthood. Live your truth. Leave the rest behind. In love.

The whole world might feel shaken up.
You’ll probably feel shaky and raw
That’s normal (they just forgot to tell you.)

You’re new here. In this skin. In this role. In this love. You’ll find your way. You’ll find your rhythm. It will all fall into place- with time.
Until then- breathe.
As deeply as you can.
Drink your tea before it gets cold.
If you can.
Rest -
whenever you can.
And love on your new self.
As deeply as you can."

❤️

Parenthood is HARD! As a society, we don’t give new parents enough credit (or support!) for the amazing and difficult things they are doing (all while also learning on the job!) for their new baby.
Home based newborn and postpartum care can help ease the stress and worry of those first few weeks and months. The revolution in healthcare is here. Let’s return to a model of healthcare that supports patients and families in valuable ways!
Visit ausetmd.com to learn more about the services we offer!

"It’s all fun and games
And sexy breathing exercises for birth
And romantic plans about how he’ll take the baby while you do yoga every day

Until you’re 10 days postpartum
Still bleeding and soaked in breastmilk
Riding a roller coaster of hormones and sleep deprivation
And your lovely partner forgets to pick up a smoothie on his way home from the grocery store

And you lose your sh✨t
Like sobbing into the bathroom sink
Like cursing his mother
Like wondering why you ever procreated with someone capable of such unimaginable selfishness

And then, when the storm has passed, and you’ve had a snack- you realize
Two shaky, raw, sleep deprived humans
Trying to be life rafts for one another
While sinking into the depths of exhaustion and stress
Keeping the tiniest, most fragile, precious being afloat
Is hard AF

We weren’t meant to do this alone
We were not meant to be sent out to sea on a tiny little life boat with no map
Even the most loving, stable partnership can sink under the weight of operating in survival mode while finding your footing as parents

So, if you’re out there, treading water
Buried in laundry and breastmilk
Surviving on freezer pizza and three hours of sleep
Thinking mildly unkind thoughts about the person you chose to parent with
Because he can’t seem to calm the baby or remember your smoothies or grasp the depths of the earth shaking transition you’re navigating
You’re not alone
And it will get easier
One sleepy, shaky day at a time" ❤

I know this feeling all too well

“A premature baby is one who has had a rough start in life, but survived, and thrived because of their strength. They are little fighters and deserve to be celebrated for the amazing things they have endured.”

New research findings that underscore the importance of WIC as a part of the country's public health infrastructure:

Women who participated in WIC had reduced risks of preterm birth (10% to 15%) and low birthweight (11% to 24%), reported S. Michelle Ogunwole, MD, PhD, of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and colleagues. WIC participation was also associated with a 14% to 40% reduced risk of infant mortality.

So true.
08/13/2022

So true.

Hold the mother, not the baby.⁣

Because the baby’s being taken care of—⁣
fed, snuggled, and given all the love in the world—⁣
by not only the mother,⁣
but her partner, grandparents, siblings, cousins, and friends.⁣

But the mother,⁣
may have gaps in her mind from lack of sleep,⁣
may be mechanical in her motions as she’s healing,⁣
may feel more like a mess than a mother,⁣
may be sitting in bed, crying, feeling overwhelmed in her body and life,⁣
may be full of mom guilt because in her mind, "she's not good enough,"⁣
and she’s bleeding, wincing in pain, swollen and emotional.⁣

And the mother’s that baby's whole world and needs to be seen, so she doesn't disappear into that postpartum fog.⁣

So, hold the mother, not the baby.⁣

A mother agrees that her baby matters more.⁣
But she’s hurting, while she’s the person behind the baby,⁣
in the background, making it all happen:⁣
feeding her baby at all hours,⁣
snuggling her baby close to comfort newborn cries,⁣
and being that baby’s everything.⁣

So, it’s the mother who needs your love.⁣

And a mother will remember who held her up.⁣

So instead of “I’m coming to see the baby,”⁣
try saying, “I’m coming to see you 𝘢𝘯𝘥 meet the baby, too.”⁣

Because the mother needs to be held more.⁣

There is a lot of confusing information about pacifiers and breastfeeding. The data shows that pacifiers are not harmful to long term breastfeeding goals. Breastfeeding success comes with good ongoing lactation support for moms and babies. Auset MD offers in home newborn medical care and lactation support. Go to our website for more information!

Systematic review examining pacifier use in term infants finds equal breastfeeding rates at 2, 3, 4, and 6 months.
In preterm neonates, the use of a pacifier shortened the duration of hospitalization by 7 days and the time from gavage to total oral feeding by more than 3 days!

Bring on the non-nutritive sucking for & don’t worry about the term infants and interrupting breastfeeding!
