Although the words “Alzheimer’s” and “dementia” are often used interchangeably, they aren’t quite the same thing. It’s important to know the differences between their symptoms and how they progress, so you can find more effective ways to manage symptoms and make more informed care decisions for your loved one:

If your person with dementia is trying to leave the house or go into a particular room that you don’t want them to, here is a redirection technique you can use:

Try to distract the person with an object (flowers, a painting, an animal) or question that grabs his or her attention. Ask that person’s opinion about the object or question. This will engage his or her interest so that hopefully the other destination or “errand” is forgotten.

This strategy works much better than forbidding or punishing the person for trying to leave!

Because sleep patterns change as we age, seniors typically have more trouble falling asleep and sleeping through the night.

Common reasons for poor sleep among seniors include medication side effects, discomfort from medical conditions, the need to urinate more frequently, an irregular sleep/wake cycle, daytime napping, or too much time spent in bed.

Chronic sleep deprivation definitely takes its toll on both the senior and the caregiver. Following these recommendations will go a long way towards bringing a little more shut-eye:

Those suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s experience changes in their brains that affect their ability to listen, understand, and respond to normal conversation.

For that reason, the best way to talk to someone with Alzheimer’s is in short, direct sentences, with only one thought per sentence. Since they have less information to process that way, there’s a greater chance that they’ll actually understand what you’re saying and will be able to reply appropriately.

Here are some real-life examples of how you could use fewer words but still communicate kindly:
