On Thursday, the Sandwich Glass Museum hosted its second annual “Pink Pumpkins with a Purpose” — an inspiring evening dedicated to breast wellness. Special guest speakers Dr. Naomi Kalliath and breast cancer survivor Jennifer Rako shared powerful messages about early detection, strength and community.

“One in eight women are affected by breast cancer,” said Dr. Kalliath, DO, a breast cancer surgeon at Cape Cod Healthcare Breast Surgery in Hyannis and Falmouth. “Massachusetts consistently has one of the highest survival rates in the country, and that’s because of access to early detection and excellent care. Awareness is the first step.”

Rako spoke about her personal journey—from diagnosis in 2009 to survivorship—and how it inspired her to give back by starting the Cape Cod Women’s Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Fund in 2018.

“My goal was to turn something frightening into something hopeful,” said Rako, adding the fund has helped hundreds of women access lifesaving care when cost might have been a barrier.

Guests also enjoyed a live glassblowing demonstration and auction, with pink pumpkins shining bright as symbols of strength and community support.

Throughout the month of October, a portion of all pumpkin sales supports the Cape Cod Women’s Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Fund at Cape Cod Healthcare, helping to cover the cost of diagnostic testing and treatment not covered by insurance.
