Next in our discussion of how toxins can block your weight loss progress, meet OBESOGENS. They sound like Star Trek villains right? Well, Shields up! 💫 OBESOGENS are metabolism disrupters! They include toxins such as pesticides, flame retardants, PVC, and various chemicals found in air pollution and cigarette smoke. OBESOGENS, interfere with normal hormone function and therefore adversely effect your metabolism. This, of course, causes weight and fat accumulation. So they totally are Villains! Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post on how to deal with their interfering ways and get this weight loss mission back on track. You can do this!

Next on our list of factors that could be making that last ten pounds stick around is the role that Toxins can play in our health. Did you know there are sooo many more chemicals in the environment than there were 50 years ago? Many of these chemicals are well-intentioned like the stuff (BPA or similar compounds) inside containers to make them non-stick or the phthalates used to make plastic stronger or more flexible. These chemicals are used in everything from food containers to clothing to shampoo. Some of these chemicals happen to be very similar in structure to our natural hormones, like estrogen. When they get into our bodies these chemicals stimulate the same receptors as our natural hormones, but unlike our own hormones, they tend to stay in place for long periods of time. That’s why we call these chemicals endocrine disruptors. A commonly used herbicide (w**d killer), atrazine, which is used on golf courses and perhaps even in your yard can even make male frogs into female frogs, 🤮 🐸😰So imagine what that chemical is doing to you! 🤭😱. Stay tuned for more ways that the toxins in your environment could be blocking your weight loss success. Take care of yourselves out there!

I was in a rush to get to the office this morning. As a chronic multi-tasker I thought I could 1) brush my teeth 2) cut up an orange for lunch 3) make coffee 4) put on my belt 5) check my schedule for the day... Simultaneously. It turns out this is not possible. But you probably knew that already 🤦‍♂️😆 I'm gradually learning after 50 years that multi-tasking is not the best way to get anything done well. The mind and body are just not engineered for this. Anyone else here a chronic multi-tasker?

We have covered some ways that inflammation manifests itself and can halt your weight loss in my previous posts. Now let’s talk about some solutions! So, how can you reverse and prevent chronic inflammation and effectively reach your healthy weight goals?  The first solution is to put out the “flames” of inflammation with WATER. Make sure you are adequately hydrating with good quality filtered water. Next, don’t add fuel to that fire:  avoid processed foods which usually contain artificial ingredients, sugars (especially fructose, a major cause of insulin resistance), and unhealthy fats (like vegetable oil or saturated fat from grain-fed meat). Eat “anti-inflammation” foods such as fresh, whole, naturally occurring carbohydrate sources like whole grains, fresh berries or vegetables, olive oil, and good sources of omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, flax seed, and walnuts instead of soft drinks, fruit juices from concentrate or leftover Halloween candy. Lastly, calm your inflammation with mindfulness and intentional rest. R&R is crucial for keeping inflammation under control. Keep a regular sleep schedule if you can, so that your circadian cycles are not disrupted. When you rest it’s easier for you to manage your stress; forgive yourself, breathe deeply, thank your body for all it does for you. Putting out the fires of inflammation can reignite the engines of your metabolism. Then your body might just let go of the weight you are trying to lose. Take care of yourself, friends. And remember, you can do this!

Can too much of a good thing be too much? YES. The normal act of exercising or being physically active always results in a certain level of inflammation. Over-training, however, or too much intense exercise with too little rest and recovery, can lead to chronic inflammation. Overtraining is more common than you might think, even in us mere mortals who work out but are not training for the Olympics. Chronic inflammation caused by overtraining can make your weight loss efforts slow or stall, and when you are working out really hard that can feel really unfair. This can be remedied with a change in mindset regarding rest, and a plan for regular R&R. There are some nutritional adjustments that can help rebalance chronic inflammation that I will cover in my next post. Until then, plan some down time this weekend along with your usual weekend warrior workout. Rest can be a winning choice on your road to weight loss and a healthy fitness regiment. You can do this!

In today’s episode of “The last ten pounds are the hardest to lose”, let’s talk about how Inflammation can slow or halt your weight loss by causing the Leptin hormone system to stall. Leptin is a hormone that is produced by fat cells. Under normal circumstances, this hormone is released by your fat cells when they are “full” and acts as a powerful satiety signal to the brain that “you’ve had enough.” if inflammation is present, the leptin system doesn’t work correctly, and you end up with what is called leptin resistance. Leptin resistance leads to feeling hungry all the time, to decreased metabolism, and to weight retention and even weight gain. Stay tuned to see how to rebalance your leptin hormone system and keep inflammation of your list of weight loss worries. Tomorrow we will talk about overtraining. Is there such a thing as too much exercise? Yep! Until then, take a deep breath, grab some water and stay safe out there. You can do this!

Our next culprit on the list of Inflammation related stumbling blocks for your weight loss journey: Insulin Resistance. Insulin resistance can occurs when cells require more and more of the hormone insulin to permit glucose (sugar) into cells where it is either used or stored as fats. Chronically higher insulin levels can cause you to seek out simple carbohydrates and sugars to prevent low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia). This leads to a really frustrating vicious cycle. The more sugars you eat and fat you store in your cells, the more insulin resistance is present. If unchecked this can lead to type II diabetes. Stay tuned in this series for some ways to reverse and rebalance Insulin resistance and get back to a healthy internal balance. Tomorrow we will cover another frequent cause of inflammation: Leptin The more you understand the language your body is speaking the more you can respond with what it needs to thrive! You can do this! See you tomorrow.

Inflammation is behind almost all chronic illnesses. It’s also a major cause of weight and fat gain and a major reason why losing those last 10 pounds may be very difficult. The term Inflammation comes from the Latin word Inflammare which means “in flames”. I’ll spare you more Latin here, but you won’t be surprised to hear that the four main signs of inflammation are heat, pain, redness and swelling. Internal inflammation is your body’s response to substances or events which threaten to disturb your natural state of internal calm and balance. Your body releases many different signaling molecules to defend itself like adrenalin, cortisol, insulin, and pro-inflammation cytokines (immune system signals) such as IL-6 and c-reactive protein. All these signals are designed to do one thing: save your life. The problem is there is always some “collateral damage” to normal, healthy cells when the defensive response goes on for too long. Chronic inflammation is a major reason why an attempt to lose weight will stall. In the next three posts I’ll break down some major stumbling blocks that chronic inflammation can throw in the way of your weight loss goals: Insulin resistance, Leptin hormone system disruption, and Overtraining. Then we will talk about managing reversing and preventing inflammation. You can do this!

Sadly, I ran out of my non-dairy walnut "milk" for my coffee this morning. Woe is me, right? 😣 My bad- I just didn't feel like going to the store yesterday. I tried using some dried coconut milk I use for my turmeric "golden milk" along with melted cacao butter (which is a great fat to go with the walnut milk). Even with that the end result was sadly disappointing despite what it said on the coconut milk package. Not quite 🤮 but definitely not😀. Anyone else ever try this?
