I was making art alongside a client this week; this is the image that emerged without prior contemplation of what I would create. I’m still sitting with this image because I sense it holding a lot of meaning for me. Some words that come to my mind are family, safety, hopefulness, wonder & innocence.

Symbols can emerge in your artwork whether it’s your first time creating or your hundredth time.

After many years of creating, I’ve developed relationships with the reoccurring symbols in my art. Some symbols have served their purpose & faded away with time, some new ones have emerged, and some have stuck around but undergone transformations in terms of how they manifest & the forms they take.

Learning how to find and communicate with your symbols can be an incredible path to wisdom & insight, because when we get in touch with our symbols, we really are getting in touch with a very deep part of our self.

Do you know your symbols? Commment below ⬇️

Generational traumas are the dysfunctional thoughts, feelings, behaviors and beliefs that get passed down from parents to children, often unconsciously and unintentionally.

In this art directive, clients are invited to reflect on the echo chamber of their dysfunctional family system & hear the voices of past generations sharing the maladaptive strategies they learned in order to survive.

Then, with compassion, we identify the strategies that are no longer helpful, and we let them go and begin something new.

Processing and healing generational trauma can be incredibly challenging, draining & uncomfortable. Any person can break the cycle if they put their mind to it and do the work. However, I do highly recommend finding a therapist to provide support and insight, as generational trauma responses can be deeply ingrained and hard to recognize on our own.

The quiet and simple directives can be the more challenging directives if you’ve spent a long time in your cognitive brain, thinking and rationalizing away what you feel. Sometimes we need help coming back to a place of stillness and just “being” for a moment.

Here, you simply paint when you breathe; each circle is a breath. Paint until the page is full.

Hi! My name is Rachel Nuñez and I am an art therapist and Associate Professional Counselor (APC) in the state of Georgia.

My specialty is working with adults and young professionals who experience anxiety, depression, or relational distress connected to childhood wounds and complex trauma.

The messages you carry with you from your childhood directly impact how you feel about yourself, navigate relationships, and deal with stressors. Whether you have a history of family trauma or just a general sense of unease associated with your childhood and upbringing, you may want to consider how your family dynamics and childhood unmet needs may be influencing your life today.

I am available via telehealth to anyone currently living in the state of Georgia; in-person sessions available in Sandy Springs! Call or email today to schedule a session or free consultation

In some faiths & cultures, this is a time of year when a lot of fasting takes place. Fasting is voluntary abstinence from food or drink under certain parameters; it can also sometimes involve abstaining from other goods or activities.
While fasting is generally thought of as a spiritual practice, we know that it can have a profoundly positive impact on mental health.
Fasting encourages self-reflection and self-regulation; it encourages mindfulness and gratitude. Often what is being abstained from was something vou're better off without anyway, and so it can initiate great positive change.
Fasting reminds us that discomfort is not to be feared, and that sometimes comfort is a false friend.
Disclaimer: the quote, which is one of my favorites & perfectly captures the idea behind fasting, ironically comes from a man who was famously non-religious!

There was no agenda when I started these “sister” paintings in tandem last week.

Although the theme of each image came forward clearly in my mind, it’s up for interpretation which image comes “first”; is it a question followed by an answer, or a directive followed by a reflection?

I don’t totally understand where these images came from, but I trust the process and expect that in due time their meaning will become more clear.

The Hope Jar invites you to explore & reflect on your relationship with hope while creating an object that will 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶.

First, you decorate the jar as the vessel for your hopes, considering how you would want your hopes preserved. Both the process & product of the jar is a point for reflection & discussion.

Then, you write down your hopes, ones you have for yourself and/or others, and place them in the jar. This step may be more difficult or easy depending on your relationship with hope - for some, hope may come easily. For others, hope may feel distant or even dangerous. But, it’s important not to hold back here - 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘴 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘳 𝘣𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳 “𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤” - 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳.

When the jar is complete & your hopes are tucked inside, it’s up to you what you do with it. Whether you display the jar where you can see it frequently or hide it away, you will know that your hopes are being kept & preserved in a safe place for you.

This directive could be done independently; however, I recommend working with an art therapist who could support you in discussing and processing the directive and what it may bring up for you, especially if you are struggling to have hope.

“Wife, Mother, Therapist, Myself” (2023) collage

Each collage explored a different part of my identity at this stage of my life. I reflected on how I see myself and how I want to show up in these roles in 2023; I wrote my thoughts down on the back of each collage.

I found the process insightful as I quickly noticed which parts of me were easy to get in touch with and express, and which ones were needing attention and took longer to develop.

It was also a great way to process and internalize my newest identity, mother, and notice how the rest of me is adjusting to and accommodating this newer role.

This collage was about facing the self and confronting questions of identity - “who am I?” and “who do I want to be?” - without demanding an immediate answer.
