Confident Kids Occupational Therapy, LLC

Confident Kids Occupational Therapy, LLC OT with functional/mechanical activities to increase motor skills, coordination, strength, visual-motor, and sensory processing skills. See "Story."

Confident Kids Occupational Therapy, LLC was founded by pediatric occupational therapist Charlie Johnson, OTR/L. At Confident Kids, we specialize in treating children/adolescents with autism, sensory processing challenges (SPD), arousal modulation difficulties, coordination challenges, motor planning difficulties, visual-motor delays, muscle weakness, and decreased muscle tone. Charlie created Confident Kids to provide an alternative to the traditional brick and mortar outpatient pediatric clinics. One factor that sets us apart from others is our clinical setting. Our setting consists of an indoor OT gym (rock wall, crash cushions, swings, spring board, balance beams, trampoline, therapy balls, etc.), workshop (workbench, tools, paint, etc.), a game room (air hockey, foosball, skittles, mini bowling), and an outdoor space where approximately 50% of our sessions take place (15 foot rock wall, tree house, sand box, boulder paths, fish pond, creek, enclosed trampoline, two 100ft plus ziplines). Another factor that sets us apart from others are the functional/mechanical approaches Charlie often uses with his clients. For example, if a child is having difficulty with sitting still, paying attention, and handwriting at school, we identify the underlying challenges causing the problems and address them in the clinic and with home programming that is fun and functional. For one child, this could mean building a skateboard (increasing upper limb strength, dexterity, motor planning skills, as well as sustained attention) then using their new skateboard for core strengthening/endurance/vestibular/arousal modulation activities. For another child, this could mean making environmental adaptations at school and altering their morning or afternoon sensory diet. At Confident Kids OT, we acknowledge that no one child or family is the same; thus each client is respected as unique. We never see a diagnosis as defining a kid, and in turn realize that some "problems" can actually be nurtured into great strengths. We use a holistic approach to working with you and your child. This means we treat the sensory, motor, and environmental factors influencing your child as equally important. A child's positive development often takes a team, which is what we develop at Confident Kids OT. We will collaborate with your child, family, schools, other health professionals, coaches, and anyone else that we identify as a valued potential team member. This highlights another important difference between us and other clinics, which is that we require a parent or caregiver to be present during sessions to increase their knowledge of their child's challenges and how best to work with them at home or in the community. Our evaluation process includes a 2-hour in-clinic evaluation, a formal written report which uses standardized measures, and a 1-1/2 hour parent-therapist conference to go over the evaluation and any questions you have in detail. Consultation services and workshops are also available for families, teachers, coaches, school administrators, and others. At Confident Kids Occupational Therapy, our goal is to develop your children's understanding and ability to utilize the tools within and around them. Once they develop these skills, their creativity and adaptability can lead to great accomplishments and a purposeful life.
