A mother’s intuition and a unique treatment regimen helped Alex “Hulk smash” his tumor. 👊

When Alex's parents adopted him, they knew he potentially had a genetic syndrome and that his biological father had a kidney disease. Despite showing no symptoms, his mom listened to her gut and had Alex's kidneys scanned.

An ultrasound showed no signs of kidney disease, but instead, revealed a mass. One of his kidneys was immediately removed, and Alex came to our Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center where he was diagnosed with a malignant rhabdoid tumor and received a bold treatment regimen.

Today, Alex no longer focuses on smashing his tumor. Instead, he plays with his favorite superhero, The Hulk, and is thriving in pre-K with his friends.

Step into a day in the life of Dr. Shari Barkin, Pediatrician-in-Chief at Children’s and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine.

Like many of our physician leaders, she splits her time between clinical, research and administrative work. But long before her time at Children's, Dr. Barkin considered many different careers, including engineering, accounting and even professional dancing. But a personal health experience during college changed her perspective and set her on a path to medicine.

Canaan fell in love with theater in fifth grade, right around the same time he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. When his world changed behind the scenes, the stage was where he felt most like himself.

Just days before his local theater’s auditions, Canaan was admitted to Children’s with diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious complication of diabetes. He thought he’d have to miss his chance to act, but he wasn’t ready to give up just yet.

With the help of his mom, care team and theater director, they teamed up to create a new plan: a virtual audition. Even from a hospital room, Canaan stole the show and landed the lead part! 🎭

Brynlee’s heart might be tiny, but her strength and resilience are mighty. ❤️

Born with a rare congenital heart defect, Brynlee’s family traveled from South Georgia to the Children’s Heart Center for her first surgery at just three months old. Since then, she has bravely faced every step of her journey with her family and care team by her side.

Ella is giving back to the place that brought her comfort and strength.

After undergoing surgery at Children's, she turned her gratitude into action by raising $5,000 as part of her ongoing Bat Mitzvah project. She delivered 675 activity bags filled with coloring supplies, Play-Doh and more to help other kids feel like kids again. 💚
