The question that never leaves me is “Why?”.

Why does the kid with the 145 IQ fall apart in a group project. Why is the one everyone expects to thrive the one quietly unraveling by October.

It’s rarely the IQ. It’s almost always the EQ.

Proud to have Dr. Rick Pollard representing our team at the Autism Symposium next Tuesday. Rick has spent his career at the intersection of education and family systems and brings a depth of understanding to this work that consistently makes me think differently about the students we share.

He’ll be joining Amee Hardy, Katie Rienstra, and Helen Waldron for a session that gets into the real bones of emotional intelligence and what it looks like in the students sitting across from us every day.

Title: When “More Therapy” Becomes The Problem - Challenging Assumptions About Treatment for Autistic Adolescents and Young Adults
————————————————————-

The work of supporting autistic young people is nuanced, demanding, and deeply personal. So when something feels off about the way we're helping, that's worth paying attention to.

Many clinicians carry a quiet unease about whether the therapy being offered is truly the right fit, in type, intensity, or role. These doubts tend to live in side conversations, waiting for a space where they can be explored more openly.

Greg Burnham and Dr. Lisa Cheyette are doing just that, offering those conversations a place to finally land. Their presentation explores how the pressure to legitimize the role of treatment providers can quietly lead to rigid expectations that limit curiosity and individualized care, and offers strategies for turning those private doubts into constructive dialogue, including an honest look at where coaching fits alongside therapy, as a complement, and sometimes as a more appropriate choice.

It's a conversation about being more thoughtful, not less therapeutic. And the goal is simple: to leave feeling grounded, a little freer, and more able to give the young people we serve what they actually need.

We are proud to share that Dr Lisa Cheyette has been appointed Co-Chair of the Therapeutic Consulting Association Board of Directors.

What makes this milestone particularly meaningful is the journey behind it. From TCA member, to Board Secretary, and now Co-Chair, her progression reflects not just tenure, but genuine investment in the TCA’s mission of advancing collaboration, education, and support for Therapeutic Consultants and Referring Professionals.

Our practice is honored to have a leader who continues to help shape the field with intention and care. Congratulations Dr Lisa Cheyette!

Title: “Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Unlocked: The Skills Behind Success”
————————————————————-

We’ve spent years measuring what students know. This session, however, asks us to measure who they’re becoming.

Emotional intelligence, how we read ourselves, relate to others, manage stress, make decisions…doesn’t show up on a transcript. Yet, it shows up everywhere else.

Grateful to have Dr Rick Pollard of Dr Lisa Cheyette and Associates join this much needed conversation with Ames Hardy, Katie Rienstra, and Helen Waldron and showcase our opportunities to build the bridge between assessment and real-world support.

Parenting a child who struggles with significant anxiety can feel like carrying the weight of the unknown. Do we lean into more support? Consider treatment? Hold steady with what we have? Wherever you are in the process—just beginning to explore options, in the midst of treatment, or navigating the return to daily life—finding clarity matters.

Dr. Lisa Cheyette, a Yale-trained psychologist in the SPACE model (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Experiences), invites parents and caregivers to an introductory webinar. SPACE is an evidence-based, parent-focused approach that helps reduce anxiety, OCD, and ASD-related challenges by shifting how caregivers respond—without requiring direct child participation.

This webinar is a chance to gently explore what it might look like to work within the SPACE model, and how it could support your family—or families you know—in their process.

📌 Registration opens Monday, August 25th. We’ll drop the registration link then—but for now, mark your calendar and plan to attend one of the two available dates.

Open to All: Upcoming DLCA Webinar

We’re excited to share our next offering in the Open to All workshop series—a live webinar designed for parents who want to better understand and support their anxious children.

We’ll be diving into Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE)—a research-backed, parent-focused approach developed at the Yale Child Study Center. Instead of placing the responsibility for change on the child, SPACE guides parents in shifting their responses to anxiety in a way that supports lasting, meaningful change at home.

In our ongoing exploration of identity, we pause with curiosity and care to consider the lived experiences of those navigating both autism and gender diversity. What possibilities open when we listen more deeply? What insights emerge when we create space for nuance, self-definition, and becoming?

This conversation invites reflection—a chance to engage with complexity, celebrate personal agency, and expand our collective understanding of what it means to be fully seen and understood.

Join us in centering voices that are too often overlooked—and discovering what shifts when we lead with inquiry and respect.

Supporting Families in a New Way: SPACE Treatment Now Offered by Dr. Lisa Cheyette

Dr Lisa Cheyette has integrated Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) into her practice. Developed at the Yale Child Study Center, this evidence-based, parent-focused approach helps parents/caregivers support children and adolescents with anxiety, OCD, and related challenges—without requiring the child to attend therapy.

📍Where: Autism Symposium in Oregon

Dr. Lisa Cheyette and Dr. Rick Pollard of Dr. Lisa Cheyette & Associates are honored to present at this year’s Autism Symposium. Their session will explore the complex and often overlooked intersection of autism and gender diversity. In this session, they will:

🔸Explore emerging research on the increased prevalence of gender diversity among autistic individuals
🔸Discuss how identity development is shaped through a neurodiverse lens
🔸Examine the critical role of affirming, individualized care in supporting both gender and neurodiverse identities

This presentation is not just a look at research but an invitation to rethink how we approach care. It’s a call to engage with the nuanced realities of individuals navigating autism and gender with curiosity, empathy, and inclusivity.

This is a timely conversation that invites clinicians, educators, and advocates to lean into complexity with curiosity and care, elevate our approach to care, and deepen our collective understanding of identity and neurodiversity.
