Vaccines are Coming. Let's fight back against misinformation that Sen. Ron Johnson, and others, are promoting.
1. mRNA vaccines such as Pfizer's and Moderna's are not new. Been around since the 1990s.
2. They are not gene therapy. The mRNA never enters the nucleus of a cell, so cannot affect DNA.
3. The mRNA stimulates muscle cells to produce a copy of the spike protein of SARs COV 2, then deactivates.
4. These spike proteins are not the complete virus, but a copy of the "coronas".
5. These proteins then incite our natural immune system to respond to them as invaders.
6. The immune system creates antibodies that will recognize these proteins if they enter the body-ie you get infected with Covid.
7. None of the 70,000 racially and age diverse volunteers had a serious adverse response to the vaccine, and none of them became seriously ill with Covid and had to be hospitalized.
8. Can you still get infected? Sure. But your body will be primed to respond with it's own protective system and so, any illness you have won't kill you or land you in the hospital.
9. Can you infect someone else if you've been vaccinated and get Covid? Jury is out on this one. We still have to mask until hive immunity (60-70% are vaccinated) is reached. Darn.
10. Do we know that ten years from now, there won't be a side effect we can't predict? Nope. Is it better than dying of, having life long issues with, or even worse, transmitting this deadly disease to a loved one? Yep.
I am really excited about this type of vaccine, it has enormous potential to transform the battles against infectious disease. Unfortunately, it has to be kept very very cold (94 F below for Pfizer's, warmer for Moderna's) so it's use in places that don't have that kind of freezing ability will be limited. There are other vaccines on the horizon.
