If you think someone might be considering su***de, ask them. While it may feel counterintuitive or even uncomfortable, research shows that asking others about su***de reduces su***de risk. Try questions like:

• “Seems like something is up, wanna talk about it?”
• “I noticed you have been more withdrawn, are you doing okay?”
• “Have you had thoughts of su***de?”
• “Are you considering ending your life?”

“Asking the question does not increase the chances of someone harming themselves, it does the opposite,” said Matt Steinkamp, director of the Intermountain Employee Assistance Program (IEAP). “Someone asking the question provides the opportunity for the person to answer it. People feeling this way often feel shame or guilt for doing so or assume that no one cares or would care if they followed through with su***de. Asking the question opens up the opportunity to talk about how they are feeling. Asking the question shows you care and want to help. It can take the focus off the hopelessness the person is feeling and begin to focus on getting the support they need.”

Patients in a remote area of Fairbanks, Alaska, now have broader access to greatly needed cancer services due to a groundbreaking telehealth partnership between Intermountain Health and the Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC).

The Telehealth Oncology collaboration brings comprehensive cancer care closer to home for Alaska Native populations across a vast and remote region. This is a group research shows, has a higher rate of cancers than non-Native Alaskans.

The TeleOncology partnership with Intermountain Health is designed to reduce travel time and expenses, allowing many patients to remain in their communities during cancer treatment and receive the best possible treatment and comprehensive cancer care.

After initial in-person oncology treatments in Fairbanks, many patients can continue follow-up care remotely, including some lab monitoring and telehealth consultations.

In an emergency, a few minutes can make all the difference. That’s why Intermountain Health teamed up with Utah’s largest school districts to teach staff the three principles of Stop The Bleed:

-Pressure
-Wound Packing
-Tourniquets

“Teaching people proper CPR for the last several decades has made a huge difference in saving lives and now Stop the Bleed training is aiming to do the same,” said Maranda Davis, RN, trauma services manager for Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital in Provo. “Providing our educators an opportunity to have a hands-on experience with tools is a key component to this training. It helps remove the hesitancy someone may have due to what they have seen in movies or on TV.”

Staff from nearly 90 schools in the Alpine School District gathered for a Stop The Bleed training course before school started, allowing them to be prepared members of the community should they be faced with an emergency situation.

❤️💜💙💛💚 It's LOVE Week at Alta View! ❤️💜💙💛💚 It's no secret that we have incredibly talented, compassionate caregivers - and here's proof. Four of our caregivers recently received L.O.V.E. Awards (Living Our Values Everyday), and we've been highlighting each recipient this week. We hope you've enjoyed it as much as we have! Meet our fourth LOVE Award recipient, Mackenzie.

Mackenzie is the nurse manager of our Women's Center team, and she received a Leadership LOVE Award for her inspiring leadership as our hospital opened our brand new labor & delivery unit earlier this year. (It's beautiful!) Read what her LOVE Award nomination says about the type of leader Mackenzie is:

"With the recent opening of our brand new labor & delivery unit, there were thousands of decisions to make during construction. From the very start of the project, Mackenzie was consistent in each and every decision, analyzing how it will impact everyone - including our patients and families, caregivers, and our providers. The end result speaks for itself!

Our team culture is one of positivity and happiness. Our patients often comment, "you all seem so happy to work here!" It's true! Mackenzie always makes safety for all a top concern. She is in close communication with our team to help solve problems with the best thought-out decisions. Each team member feels valued and listened to. Mackenzie treats everyone equally and with respect. She lives the mission and value of integrity, and is honest and direct. Our team trusts her and her ability to make the best decision. We are happy at work, and we feel supported professionally and personally to be our very best."

Join us in celebrating Mackenzie. She’s one of our incredible leaders at Alta View, and we’re grateful that she's a part of our hospital leadership team!

Congratulations, Mackenzie! 🙌

Awards (Living Our Values Everyday), so we're highlighting each recipient over the next four days. Today, meet our third LOVE Award recipient, Angela, who works on our respiratory care team. This is what one of our caregivers wrote about Angela and the positive impact she makes on this incredible team.

“Angela is the most dedicated and engaged respiratory therapist I’ve ever met. From the time she clocks in to the time she clocks out, she is found busily performing her duties at the utmost degree. Other respiratory therapists look to her for guidance in all aspects of care, learning, and scheduling. She is a master of it all!
There are many amazing traits that Angela personifies. She makes sure new caregivers are welcomed, oriented, and brought up to speed for success. She stays on top of caregiver education, and all other education and required skills pass-offs. Angela is the most dedicated respiratory therapist I’ve ever known. Spend one shift with her and she'd wear you out by just trying to keep up with her – she’s nonstop! Angela demonstrates clinical excellence and serving others to the fullest extent day in and day out.”

Congratulations, Angela! Alta View is grateful you’re part of our team!

Our first caregiver who received a LOVE Award is Cora, a patient care tech (PCT) on our Medical & Surgical unit. Cora is amazing and is beloved by her patients and her team. Read what the patient who nominated Cora for this award said about her:

"Every time Cora came into my room, she called me “Beauty”, when I felt anything but beautiful (recovering from surgery). She said it with great warmth and sincerity. She might say it or something like it to every patient, but she made me feel seen and loved while I was alone getting ready to be discharged, and again when my family member arrived at the hospital and she wheeled me out to them. She was affable without being overly chatty, warm and friendly without feeling forced, and balanced kindness and professionalism. I asked for her name specifically because I wanted to reach out to the hospital and share my positive experience!
Cora made me feel individual, recognized, understood, and medically cared for. She was the last PCT I saw upon discharging, and it concluded my stay on such a high note.”

🎉Congratulations to Cora! We're so glad you're part of our hospital team!🎉

Congratulations to Jess, who is on our culinary services team, and an integral part of the hospital, for being awarded a L.O.V.E award! Here's what her nomination for this award said about Jess. (We couldn't agree more!)

"Jessica is the type of person who doesn’t ask, 'How are you?' as a way to be polite. She asks with true sincerity. When you respond, she doesn’t just listen to your successes or woes. She celebrates with you, and she will equally share any remorse to lighten your burden.

When she visits patient rooms, her enthusiasm completely enchants them. She makes them feel like they’re the single most important thing to her, and that she would do just about anything for them. When a caregiver enters the elevator with her, she doesn’t just stand silently until she gets off the elevator, she’ll engage with whomever enters - whether it be a compliment or catching up with them. Not only does she know almost every caregiver’s name in our hospital, she also knows something specific about them, too.

She does what’s right; not for the credit, but because she believes in being kind to others. Jessica has touched so many hearts. When she walks through the halls of our hospital, the smiles and greetings that she receives are the most upbeat and spirited I’ve ever seen. I have yet to see anyone duplicate such a reaction. Because of the relationships that she’s built at Alta View, she elevates other caregivers’ energy. Her smile is contagious. Her upbeat and happy personality (hence the smile) rubs off on others. Patients and caregivers feel more loved at our hospital because she's here."

Congratulations, Jess, we're SO glad you're part of our hospital team!

🎉🙌Congratulations to Rowan Hicks, who received a L.O.V.E Award for going above and beyond to help improve a patient’s experience. Rowan is a patient service representative with Alta View Clinic’s Women’s Specialists. All Intermountain caregivers are eligible for the award, which has a variety of categories. Rowan was honored in the Enterprise Services category. L.O.V.E stands for Living Our Values Every day.

This is what the patient who nominated Rowan, said about her family's experience:

“We had a scheduled well-child visit, anticipating that our daughter would receive her vaccinations. Unfortunately when we arrived, we were informed that the appointment was 11 days too early for our daughter to be eligible for the shots. Coordinating doctor appointments can be quite challenging for us, so this was understandably frustrating. However, the doctor and medical assistant were proactive in helping us arrange a vaccinations-only appointment once she was eligible for her vaccinations.

We adjusted our family plans accordingly, only to arrive at the appointment and discover that we didn't have a scheduled visit. This compounded our frustration from the earlier scheduling error. I expressed my frustration to Rowan but made it clear that we couldn't leave without the vaccinations. Throughout this process, Rowan displayed remarkable patience and kindness, even though the mistake was not hers. She worked diligently to resolve the issue and offered her apologies.

Instead of dismissing our concerns by stating it wasn’t her fault and suggesting we reschedule, Rowan collaborated with the medical assistant and within minutes my daughter received her shots. Remarkably, my daughter described the experience as pleasant, thanks to the medical assistant's impressive skills and friendly demeanor.

Overall, I believe Rowan deserves recognition for her exemplary service, representing not only Alta View Women’s Specialties Clinic, but Intermountain as a whole. She transformed a frustrating situation into a positive experience, and we are truly grateful for her efforts. Thank you, Rowan!”
