In a captivating interview with British Vintage Boxing, legendary trainer Jimmy Tibbs recounted his extraordinary experience sparring with Muhammad Ali at just 19 years old. Having turned professional only two months prior with Terry Lawless and Mickey Duff, Tibbs was thrust into the spotlight when he was asked to spar the heavyweight champion of the world. On the day of the sparring session, Tibbs was unexpectedly picked up by a friend and driven to White City, where Ali was training. With no gear of his own, Tibbs was outfitted with equipment provided by his companion.

As the sparring commenced, Tibbs threw a couple of jabs, and to his astonishment, Ali went down. The press captured the moment, and soon after, Angelo Dundee, Ali's trainer, congratulated Tibbs on his performance. Remarkably, a photograph of the incident, depicting Ali on the canvas with Tibbs standing over him, graced the front page of the New York Times sports section, marking a significant milestone in Tibbs's early career.

Tibbs explained. “I turned pro with Terry Lawless and Mickey Duff, the matchmaker. I’d only had four fights since turning pro two months earlier and Terry’s got me out on the Muhammad Ali versus Cooper bill. A few weeks before that is when I was asked to spar Ali.⁠""

The fight between Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta, often referred to as Robinson vs. LaMotta VI, is one of the most famous bouts in boxing history because it was the final chapter of a legendary rivalry. This series of fights, spanning 1942 to 1951, featured six brutal encounters between Robinson, known for his dazzling speed and technique, and LaMotta, famed for his relentless toughness and inside fighting.
Sugar Ray Robinson won by technical knockout in the 13th round, capturing the middleweight title from LaMotta.

This fight was especially notable for the intensity and drama throughout. LaMotta used his signature inside pressure and relentless body punching, attempting to wear down Robinson. Robinson, however, demonstrated why he is widely regarded as one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters ever: his precise counterpunching, speed, and composure allowed him to break through LaMotta’s defense. The final rounds were grueling, with both fighters showing immense courage, but Robinson’s skill ultimately prevailed, and he knocked LaMotta down multiple times before the fight was stopped.

The rivalry between Robinson and LaMotta is legendary not only for the boxing but also for its cultural impact, later inspiring the 1980 film “Raging Bull,” which dramatized their fights and LaMotta’s turbulent life outside the ring. The sixth fight marked the end of their legendary battles and solidified Robinson’s legacy as one of the all-time greats.
