Name (pronouns): Kristine Rosas (she/her)
Hometown: Daly City, CA
Med school: Touro University Nevada

I chose KPOC because: When I did my sub-I here at KPOC, I knew this would be my top program. On my first day here as a rotating medical student, I instantly felt welcomed by everyone. I truly chose KPOC because of the people. I feel so incredibly lucky to have ended up at my first choice program where I get to work with the most amazing people everyday.

If I’m not working you can find me: at the beach eating ham and cheese croissant from seasode bakery (iykyj) or at the gym when I’m not too tired after wards

Fun facts:
🌊 I love the beach but I don’t know how to swim and will only go knee deep in the water. I still haven’t learned no matter how many times people have tried to teach me.
🦫 I’ve pet the largest rodent in the world - a capybara! Japan is well known for its pet cafes and I was lucky enough to find a capybara cafe.
🏄‍♀️ I’ve gone sandboarding for the first time at a coral sand dunes state park in Utah and safe to say I enjoyed it a lot more than snowboarding (because I can’t stand the cold)

Kristine just started her 2nd month of inpatient medicine so let’s show her some love! If you want to send her boba while she’s on call she likes sunright fruit tea from Sunright or rising phoenix milk tea from Orobae 🧋😂

Name: Houman Tazhibi (he/him)
Hometown: Granada Hills, CA
Med school: Western University of Health Sciences

I chose KPOC because: of how supportive and down to earth all the faculty, residents and staff are. They create a great work and learning environment, as well emphasize wellbeing and good work life balance

If I’m not working you can find me: Watching sports! Mainly soccer! I also play soccer multiple times a week ⚽️

Fun facts:
✈️ I also love traveling and trying new foods
🧑‍🍳 I love to cook but I’m terrible at it! Just need more practice!
🌠 Lastly, love going camping and doing astro-photography!

Let’s show Houman some love while he is on a much deserved vacation!

Another week and another intern spotlight! Let’s get to know Dr. Lillian Scanlon!

Name: Lillian Scanlon (she/her)
Hometown: St. Charles, IL
Med school: Saint Louis University

I chose KPOC because: the amazing and supportive faculty and residents, focus on wellness, broad curriculum, and great location!

If I’m not working you can find me: exploring new parts of OC, hiking, cooking/baking, or hanging out with my pup, Dutch!

Fun facts:
🌎 I’ve been to 14 different countries
💕 My boyfriend and I met during med school orientation and ended up couples matching together!
🐶 I used to foster dogs (and of course we wound up adopting one)

After starting her intern year with inpatient medicine, night float, and L&D, Lillian finally has a vacation coming up! Let’s show her some love before she gets some much deserved R&R!

Happy Wellness Wednesday! Resident wellness is more important than ever. We have always emphasized wellness for our residents and are always looking for more ways to optimize it.

One example of how we practice wellness is about every 2-3 months, each residency class has its own support day. On this day, each resident in the class has the afternoon off to get together to do a bonding activity to catch up, share their experiences on their various rotations, support each other and have fun.

Pictured here are our most recent support days! Check out our R2s supporting each other as they skate through another block of residency ⛸️ and our R1s escaping an afternoon of inbasket coverage by escaping this room with a whole 11:37 left on the clock 🙌🏾. Stay tuned to see what our R3s will be doing later this month! Any suggestions are welcomed in the comments!

And we’re back! Time to get back on that intern spotlight grind! Let’s learn more about Dr. Sheryl Hefti!

Name: Sheryl (she/her)
Hometown: St Francis, KS
Med School: Western University of Health Sciences—College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific

I chose KPOC because: My rotation as a medical student allowed me to experience first-hand the positive and supportive environment created by the faculty, staff, and residents. Plus, I appreciated KPOC’s curriculum (i.e., exposure to gyn, peds, derm, and behavioral medicine clinics regularly) that also focused on wellness. Finally, Kaiser is a fantastic system that helps to decrease many barriers to healthcare.

If I’m not working you can find me: hanging with my husband Josh and our border collie Wally, going to Disney, and/or sleeping

Fun Facts:
🥾Hiking is my favorite form of physical activity. Before medical school, Josh and I hiked 80 miles in 7 days through 5 of Utah’s National Parks and 1 national monument
🇨🇭Turns out I love paragliding and highly recommend trying it in Switzerland
🏝️While I will forever be a Kansas Jayhawk (Rock Chalk!), I am officially a California transplant—hard to beat great weather and the ability to visit mountains, the beach, and Disneyland all in one day

Sheryl is currently living it up in her nursery/outpatient Peds rotation 👶🏼, and her upbeat energy is infectious to everyone around her so let’s show her some love!

Happy Wellness Wednesday! Big shout out to Dr. Shah and his wife, Parul, for coming to our wellness lecture today to lead us through some very relaxing yoga exercises and mindful meditation. We are always amazed by how much you both teach us about the power of our breath.

At KPOC, wellness is always growing more and more important in our program. We have a lunch lecture dedicated to wellness at least once a month, residency class support days once every couple months, and a wellness committee spearheaded by none other than our wellness champion, .2 ! Be sure to ask us more about wellness at our open houses or on the interview trail!

Another week has come, so another opportunity to spotlight our awesome interns! Next up is Dr. Derek Hung!

Name (pronouns): Derek Hung (he/him)
Hometown: Diamond Bar, CA
Med school: California University of Science and Medicine

I chose KPOC because: Everyone was so welcoming and friendly during the interview process, which showed me that this residency treats residents like family. I felt that the program made an active effort to prioritize well-being, while also having great opportunities to practice full spectrum medicine in a diverse community.

If I’m not working you can find me: Exploring new food, parks, trails, and activities in Southern California, at the gym, going to concerts, or playing with my dog

Fun facts:
🏞️ I've been to 37 national parks and a life goal is to visit them all
🎶 I play piano and guitar and have written some (very amateur) songs
☕️ I've never had a full cup of coffee until a few months ago (but I'm definitely gonna need to when I'm on wards 🥲)

Derek has just started his first month of inpatient medicine, so let’s all show him some support and love! (and possibly drop him off some coffee 🥲)
