Since the beginning of 2021, there has been an increase of anti-transgender legislation introduced in different states across the country. According to a recent report by Human Rights Campaign, 44 anti-transgender bills have been filed in 16 states so far, including 23 that impact transgender children in schools and playing school sports. These bills place significant harm and negative social outcomes on our transgender and non-binary community members, ranging on limiting access to gender-affirming care, participation on school sports teams, equal access to gender-segregated spaces, such as restrooms, bathrooms, locker rooms, and other facilities.
⚠️ We must not let these bills deter us from the progress that we have made so far, as well as the work towards a more equitable environment for all. Having public officials, such as Rachel Levine, the first openly transgender federal official to be confirmed by the Senate, is a huge win for representation. Last year, the Supreme Court issued a historic decision that prohibits discrimination in the workplace based on gender identity or sexual orientation. Now, we have growing support for the Equality Act to protect LGBTQ people at the federal level.
