The Link Between Heart Disease and Red Meat May Sit in the Gut
Researchers have uncovered a potential answer for why red meat is so closely tied to an increased risk for cardiovascular concerns.

At the study’s end, the findings showed that participants who are more meat – and more red meat in particular – saw a higher risk for developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. That’s cardiovascular disease accompanied by thickening of the arteries.

And the increased risk wasn’t minimal, either. Participants saw a 22% higher risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease for every 1.1 serving they ate per day.

Researchers have uncovered why red meat is so closely tied to an increased risk for cardiovascular concerns, and it may be your gut.

Toolkit for reducing cervical cancer risk
January 23, 2024

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In the U.S., cervical cancer is no longer a common cause of cancer death because of the use of a screening test called a Pap smear, which detects changes in cervical cells.

While the overall rate of cervical cancer in the U.S. is declining, the number of people diagnosed with late-stage cervical cancer is increasing, and rates among Black women are disproportionately high. Research also indicates that many women still are not being screened for cervical cancer.

Kristina Butler, M.D., a Mayo Clinic gynecologic oncologist, discusses the tools available to reduce your cervical cancer risk, including a trusted healthcare professional, the HPV vaccine and regular screening:

What is the incubation period for COVID 2024?
For pre-Omicron variants, the median incubation period is 5 days with a range of 2–14 days after initial exposure; studies of the Omicron variant have estimated the incubation period to be 2–3 days. Age and underlying medical conditions increase a person's risk for severe disease and death.
Summary
The incubation periods of COVID-19 variants vary. Generally, the incubation period is getting shorter. Symptoms of recent strains like Omicron typically show up about three to four days after exposure. The newer Omicron-5 variant is similar to the original Omicron strain.

Getting a positive COVID test at home may take a week to 10 days. Regular testing after potential exposure can minimize your risk of spreading the virus.

The AI marketing hype, arguably kicked off by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has reached a fever pitch: investors and executives have stratospheric expectations for the technology. But the higher the expectations, the easier it is to disappoint. The stage is set for 2024 to be a year of reckoning for AI, as business leaders home in on what AI can actually do right now.

The Gartner hype cycle suggests that after the peak of inflated expectations comes the trough of disillusionment.
Artificial investment
The frenzied hype around AI kept expectations high.

If we haven’t reached the peak of AI hype yet, we will soon — and we’re headed for a trough of disappointment.

‘He checks in on me more than my friends and family’: can AI therapists do better than the real thing?

It’s cheap, quick and available 24/7, but is a chatbot therapist really the right tool to tackle complex emotional needs?

Last autumn, Christa, a 32-year-old from Florida with a warm voice and a slight southern twang, was floundering. She had lost her job at a furniture company and moved back home with her mother. Her nine-year relationship had always been turbulent; lately, the fights had been escalating and she was thinking of leaving. She didn’t feel she could be fully honest with the therapist she saw once a week, but she didn’t like lying, either. Nor did she want to burden her friends: she struggles with social anxiety and is cautious about oversharing.

So one night in October she logged on to character.ai – a neural language model that can impersonate anyone from Socrates to Beyoncé to Harry Potter – and, with a few clicks, built herself a personal “psychologist” character. From a list of possible attributes, she made her bot “caring”, “supportive” and “intelligent”. “Just what you would want the ideal person to be,” Christa tells me. She named her Christa 2077: she imagined it as a future, happier version of herself.

“High to extreme avalanche danger” is expected in the backcountry through Sunday evening throughout the central Sierra, including the greater Lake Tahoe area, the weather service said.

California authorities on Friday shut down 100 miles (160km) of I-80 due to “spin outs, high winds and low visibility”. They had no estimate when the freeway would reopen from the California-Nevada border just west of Reno to near Emigrant Gap, California.

Pacific Gas & Electric reported at about 5am on Saturday that 33,000 households and businesses were without power.

Are people getting Covid repeatedly?
By now, many people have had it not just once, but two, three, or even more times. Most of the time, repeat infections aren't as severe as they were the first time, leading to a sense of complacency about getting COVID-19 over and over. reinfections aren't harmless.
