Today, we honor the life and service of Sergeant Matthew R. Davis, Orange County Sheriff's Department, CA , whose End of Watch was September 22, 2002.

Born in Porterville, CA on August 1, 1964, Matt grew up in Corona and pursued his passion for law enforcement, earning his degree in Criminal Justice before joining the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in 1986. Throughout his career, Matt served with distinction in multiple assignments including the Theo Lacy Branch Jail, South Operations, the Major Accident Reconstruction Team, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, and as a respected Motor Officer and Motor Training Officer in Mission Viejo.

He earned numerous commendations, including recognition from Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) for his commitment to keeping our roadways safe. In 1999, Matt was promoted to Sergeant and continued his service in both custody and patrol operations.

On September 20, 2002, tragedy struck. While on duty as a Motor Sergeant in Mission Viejo, Sgt. Davis was struck in a traffic collision while riding his department motorcycle. After two days of valiant fight and despite heroic medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on September 22, 2002.

Matt is remembered as a dedicated law enforcement professional, a loyal friend, and a hero to his community. Above all, he was a loving husband and father to three children.

A memorial at Florence Joyner Olympiad Park in Mission Viejo stands as a tribute to his legacy and sacrifice. Sgt. Davis’ service and memory will never be forgotten. 💙
