I am RJ, an inventor, technologist and a student of human behavior. I have devoted my entire life to find customized solutions to solve the mobility, communication, and quality of life challenges, faced by all ages, with any special need. My interest in the field of 'Assistive Technology' began over 30 years ago, when I was studying to become an electrical engineer at the University of Utah. When I began my career, not many people realized the potential technology would have on the lives of those with special needs. My love for people and my interest in special needs drove me to also pursue a Bachelor's in Developmental Psychology from University of California-Irvine and a Master’s in Education, concentration in Autism Spectrum Disorder, from Arizona State University. I love what I do because my products make a tangible impact on the lives of the users by unlocking their hidden capabilities. What gives me the greatest pleasure is working one-on-one with my clients to help them tap into those abilities. For the last 18 years, I have conducted Road Trips spanning three continents to meet learners and caregivers, so I can help provide solutions that will help them overcome obstacles that they may not have thought possible. I have conducted research on Teaching Conversational Skills to Nonverbal Teens for my master’s thesis and spent time working with the RH Dana Exceptional Needs Facility, in Dana Point. Additionally, I am a frequent lecturer at the annual Assistive Technology Industry Association Conference and Closing the Gap Conference. For 10 years, I was a contributor to the popular column “Ask RJ” in the international special needs technology publication, Closing the Gap. My 30+ years of experience, enhanced by my blend of engineering studies, psychology and special education degrees, gives me a unique perspective that I can share with each learner I encounter. I can offer options and solutions that others might overlook because I believe that all things are possible and little miracles can occur all the time.

Our on-screen keyboard allows the user to enter text into any application. We’ve included many special features based on feedback from actual on-screen keyboard users.

WordComplete gives you choices of words you've used previously, in the order of frequency-of-use, to complete your current word. It learns as you use it, adding to its built-in word bank.

SizeApp/Auto-Arrange lets you size the application you are typing 'into', so that the OnScreen and app windows do not cover each other.

We’re always striving to give others access to anything that may prove too difficult otherwise. BIG Button gives you control of iPods, iPhones, smartphones, any Bluetooth device with music. You are able to use your own earbuds, headphones, speaker, or dock.
For older iPods with the 30-pin connector, we have the Dock version.

If the user cannot press the buttons manually, consider the Additional Switch Inputs for each function they wish to control. You can order Switch Inputs for that number of functions.

Quad Button Box with Xbox 360 or PS3 Game Controller

Gamers with physical challenges often can't get at the rear and/or ‘shoulder' triggers of a game controller. To help those with this problem, one solution is my QBB shown here. It both holds the controller and gives big button access to those hard-to-reach triggers.

This 8" x 4" x 2-3" box has 4 large (1.5") buttons on it that perform the functions of the trigger and 'shoulder' buttons of an Xbox 360 or PS3 game controller. It also has a mounting bracket for the actual game controller (which is included) so that the user doesn't have to hold it, and allows one-hand control of the game. Alternatively, the controller can be positioned separately and held in place with our super-duper special VELCRO®.

The CooperCar 2

Over the last 6 months, we have engineered a very unique commercially available ride-on vehicle with many capabilities and features. These include extended activation for quick switch hits, acceleration control, variable speed, with the option of wireless remote override, and we have found less expensive seating than we previously used. We currently have 14 of these in stock to offer you.

From 1991 to 1999, we created and supplied an adaptation of a commercially available ride-on vehicle that was available from Toys 'R Us. We had 848 of them around the world! Unfortunately, the manufacturer's factory burnt down along with the mold for the plastic body. At the time, this was the only battery-operated ride-on vehicle that turned via a joystick, so that was the end of that. But fear not, our current model is better than ever.

We originally designed this for a kid named Brent as an alternative to expensive powered wheelchairs. While playing with it at his school in 1991, we discovered a second very powerful use for it, cause/effect. Having a switch spin you or propel you forward turned out to be the greatest cause/effect feedback device we’ve ever employed.

When you see us at an Abilities Expo around the country, with The CooperCar 2, you'll notice that the kiddos that drive the vehicle can be significantly cognitively impaired and still get a lot out of the experience!

Streaming TV Controllers (all brands, optional switch adaptation available)

This product was created for seniors and disabled persons, for whom a conventional remote is simply inaccessible due to several factors, including but not limited to: the remote buttons being too small, too close together, or altogether having too many buttons. Our goal was to make all types of current TV and media within reach, and we delivered.

Streaming TV is very popular currently, many enjoy streaming with Roku TV, Fire TV, or Smart TV. There are the USB-plugin devices, such as Chromecast, Apple TV, Fire Stick, and Roku Stick, all vying for the top spot. These TV's and plugins connect directly with your Wi-Fi router and/or modem.

Smart TVs are not specific to a company or brand's streaming, because they don't require a separate USB device for that service (for example, they can access Netflix and a host of other streaming channels). The difference between a specific streaming TV or plugin and a Smart TV is the number of apps (i.e., channels) it offers, but that is becoming moot as they each try to cover all channels.

Our 2+2 Early Math Software is perfect for kids of all kinds. There are special features for the blind, physically challenged (switch users), and cognitive impairment. The software exhibits text in large print, and is a fantastic learning tool for early and intermediate math.

Here is an all-time favorite product of our customers, the Call Chime. It was in heavy demand and requested often, so we created it. It does not disappoint! Here we have an adorable and inexpensive switch interface designed for computers. SwitchHopper provides a place to plug switches into a computer. There are 3 switch inputs within this product. When you plug a switch into a SwitchHopper jack, the switch becomes standard mouse clicks (Win: left, middle, right; Mac: left, drag, control-click), and with installation of the accompanying software, you can configure each button to be any mouse-button event or keystroke that you’d like.

SwitchHopper does not interfere with the operation of other pointing devices, such as a mouse, and it works in addition to your mouse. Your mouse retains all of its normal functions (if installed, and the SwitchHopper software is awake, the switch inputs might be reconfigured which would affect all mouse buttons. Alt-X, toggles between awake and asleep to reinstate your regular mouse button functionality). Having this as an option is not only easy to switch back and forth, it’s also a huge time saver and extremely convenient for every user.

Our AireTouch is an exceptionally light touch switch, mounted on a plastic dowel and operated with your finger. It can be used with either the index finger or the middle finger. It is a great choice for most people with disabilities. The switch can be plugged into a wide variety of switch-adapted gadgets, an iPad, or a computer. We have used Micro-Light and Ultra-Light switches over the years and found that they were often too large or bulky for a small area. Keep in mind that this product functions with a much lighter touch than the switches mentioned above, the slightest touch will set it off.
