When your care provider suggests you get a routine ultrasound, you probably have one question on your mind: Is it safe for my baby?
When it comes to ultrasounds, there is, unfortunately, no hard and fast answer to whether or not they are "safe" in terms of modern-day medicine. The controversial procedure has become routine for all pregnant patients of western medicine, even when there are no symptoms or labs indicating any problem.
Although the mother cannot feel the effects of the ultrasound in her body, studies have found that cellular abnormalities caused by exposure to ultrasound persisted for several generations in mice. Another study reported that exposing mice to dosages typical of obstetric ultrasound caused a 22% reduction in the rate of cell division.
That said, here are some of the benefits to ultrasound:
〰 Diagnosing ectopic pregnancy or fibroids
〰 Confirming multiple gestation
〰 Detecting some anomalies, estimating the level of amniotic fluid and position of the placenta.
Although ultrasounds can give us a peek into a mysterious world, the readings are not always accurate. This can result in ambiguity or a "false positive" for a problem that isn't there.
Oftentimes, these situations can cause unnecessary anxiety & an urgency to conduct more tests or induce labor if the mother is far enough along. There are other solutions to most of the issues that may arrise, such as adjusting your diet and lifestyle.
At the end of the day, your own intuition will be a key indicator as to what you need to do for your baby. Whether you get ultrasounds during your pregnancy or not, tune into your intuition first - the answer for you will lie there 💗
