Electro-auricular acupuncture reduces opoid consumption after total knee athroplasty.

This is a small study and further research is required but it looks promising and is consistent with what we've seen in our practice.

"The trial’s primary outcome was the number of patients who maintained a low-dose opioid regimen, which the researchers defined as consumption of 15 or fewer 5-mg oxycodone pills (or 112.5 oral morphine equivalents) in the first 30 days after surgery. Secondary outcomes included total opioid consumption, numerical rating scale pain scores, and incidence of complications commonly associated with opioid use."

Furthermore, 26 of the 40 patients (65%) maintained the low-dose opioid regimen throughout the entire follow-up period. Treating chronic pain is more than just needles. Often times it requires several interventions to be successful.

A small study that was featured in the journal Pain (October 2021) highlighted the importance of pain education. Patients who received pain education were asked which pieces of information were the most helpful.

Here are the top 3:
1) Pain does not equal damage
2) That there are multifactorial factors to pain
3) Pain is a heightened but changeable protective response

These findings are consistent with our experience in treating chronic pain. We've been fortunate to help a lot of patients on their journey but it took several disciplines to get there.

Seems so simple right? Getting good sleep is important for maintaining good health. Here is a tip on how to get a good night sleep.

Your bedroom, as in the room you sleep in. Should be quiet, cool, dark, and used only for sleeping (and/or s*x)

Quiet - if there is a lot of noises coming into the room while you're sleep chances are they're affecting your sleep. Try using a white noise machine or ear plugs.

Cool - we sleep better in cool places. Santa Barbara is a little easier than most places because it gets cooler here at night naturally but if your still running warm a fan may be helpful.

Dark - get those black out curtains read. Seriously, the darkness helps with melatonin production and this eases us into a nicer slumber.

The brain is an associative creature and if the bed is used as your desk than it will start to create anxiety about being in bed. So keep the bed off limits to stressors.

What do patients value learning about pain? That was the title of a small study done with patients with persistent pain. This study was in the October 2021 Pain journal; involved 123 patients, the youngest being 16 and the oldest being 65+. Pain education has been shown to have benefit to patient that might otherwise have run out of options.
The three takeaways on what the participants found to the the most effective pieces of education were:
1) Pain does not mean my body is damaged
2) Thoughts, emotions, and experience affect pain
3) I can retrain my overprotective pain system

We hope this small study will engender more of its kind as interventions like these are easy to employ and can have a ripple effect.

Trail running has been gaining a lot of attraction by active runners and general nature lovers. A condition that a lot of trail runners are experiencing is achilles tendonitis which pain along the back of the heel.

The frequent ups and downs of trail running put a lot of undue pressure on your lower extremities. The best thing is to stay aware and treat this condition early.
