Registration is now open for Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp (JWSC), July 21–25 at UCSB!

JWSC is designed for youth athletes and young adults, ages 6-21, with physical disabilities who use a wheelchair, or could use a wheelchair, to participate in sports.

Camp is FREE. Transportation to the camp site, UC Santa Barbara Recreation Center, will be available from Carpinteria, Goleta, Lompoc, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and Ventura/Oxnard areas, for those who need it.

Volunteers Needed for Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital's Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp!

Join the Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp family and help campers 6-21 years old participate in wheelchair sports and activities including tennis, basketball, rugby, aquatics, hand cycling and more!

New and returning volunteers can apply online: cottagehealth.org/wheelchaircamp

Help is needed Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Volunteers must be 14 years or older. Minimum of three-day volunteer commitment. The deadline to apply is June 16.

“I am so grateful for the excellent, attentive care Remy received at Cottage. Everyone – nurses, doctors and therapists – was amazing!” – Lisa, Remy’s mother

Earlier this year, 16-month-old Remy began having trouble breathing and was rushed to the emergency department at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he was diagnosed with RSV and hospitalized. He received treatment and care that included respiratory therapy and oxygen. Day by day, Remy began feeling better.

He was able to return home after a five-day stay at Cottage Children’s Medical Center and soon bounced back to his active toddler life of running, playing and enjoying his picture books, which included a favorite that he received from the Cottage Child Life team.

Cottage Health is proud to announce the election of Dr. Lynn Fitzgibbons to its Board of Directors.

A respected physician leader with nearly two decades of clinical and administrative experience, Dr. Fitzgibbons brings deep expertise in infectious diseases, public health and medical education. She serves as Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and holds multiple medical directorships within Cottage Health, including for Infection Prevention and Control and the Cottage Center for Population Health. Dr. Fitzgibbons is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. A proud alumnus of the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), she is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at UCSB.

Throughout her career, Dr. Fitzgibbons has led local pandemic responses, directed quality initiatives, and championed equitable, community-based care.

Hospital Week may have come to an end, but at Cottage Health, we celebrate our team year-round. Today, we are proud to spotlight Tegan Hannah, a valued member of our Clinical Informatics and Care Delivery Applications team and a recent recipient of the DAISY Leadership Award.

Tegan was nominated by colleagues who shared the following:

“Tegan has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication in improving nursing documentation processes. Under her guidance, the nursing Magnet Documentation Task Team has successfully implemented several innovative solutions that have significantly enhanced the accuracy, efficiency and usability of nursing documentation. These improvements have not only streamlined workflows but also ensured that patient care information is accurately captured and easily accessible, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.

Tegan has both creative vision and strategic thinking in identifying areas for improvement while leveraging technology to address these challenges."

We are proud to share that Ron Werft, Cottage Health’s former President & CEO and now President Emeritus, has been awarded the 2025 Board of Trustees Award by the American Hospital Association.

Presented during the AHA Annual Membership Meeting in Washington, D.C., this national recognition honors Ron’s decades of leadership and contributions to health care locally and nationally.

Over his 38-year career at Cottage—including 25 years as President & CEO—Ron helped transform access to care across the Central Coast, guided major system growth, and strengthened partnerships that will benefit our community for years to come.

In celebration of Nurses Week, we are proud to highlight Jolee Farias, an Emergency Department nurse and recent DAISY Award recipient. Jolee was nominated by a colleague who shared the following:

"I would like to take a moment to highlight the exceptional contributions of a nurse I work with, whose dedication and expertise have made a significant impact on our team. On two recent occasions, Jolee stepped up to help our co-workers during cardiac emergencies, demonstrating remarkable calmness and efficiency in her care. Once when I was charge, the medics brought in a patient on a cardiac monitor. Jolee saw that the patient had become unresponsive and was in a lethal heart rhythm. Without delay, she took charge and cardioverted the patient at the charge nurse desk. It was such a testament to Jolee’s attention to detail, and the patient survived. During these often-frightening times, she remains composed and focused, providing the necessary support and medical intervention with precision. “Jolee’s knowledge of emergency medicine is evident in every action she takes. We are fortunate to have her as a colleague, and her contributions have enhanced the quality of care we provide. I love working with her and know if I needed her, she would take the very best care of me.”
