What is CBD anyway?! And how is it different from ma*****na or THC?!

CBD is a chemical found in ma*****na plants. This chemical does not contain the psychoactive ingredients also found in ma*****na called THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, therefore, CBD will not produce the “high” that most people associate with ma*****na use. CBD mostly comes in an oil formulation, but it is also sold in extract, capsule, or a vaporized liquid format.

Want to know what CBD can do for you?! Stay tuned for our blog, coming this week!

🔷What is an epidural steroid injection?
An epidural injection is an injection of medications which usually includes a local anesthetic and a steroid that is injected into the opening at the side of the spine where a nerve root exits. This opening is known as a foramen.

🔷Am I a candidate for a transforaminal epidural injection?
Transforaminal epidural injections are commonly offered to patients with narrowing of the spinal canal or the foramen, which causes compression of the spinal nerves. This compression can lead to pain which is typically described as burning, numbness, and/or tingling radiating to the area where the specific injured nerve innervates.

🔷What are the benefits of transforaminal epidural injections?
The long acting steroid that is injected reduces the inflammation and swelling of spinal nerve roots and other tissues surrounding the spinal nerve root. This may in turn reduce pain, tingling, numbness, and other symptoms caused by such inflammation, irritation or swelling. Transforaminal injections can also be used to identify a specific spinal nerve root level in the process of evaluating the source of pain, so the injection can be both therapeutic and diagnostic.

Injections and nerve blocks can be done diagnostic reasons, therapeutic reasons, or a combination of both. But what does this mean?

🔷Diagnostic injections are used to diagnose where pain is coming from. They are not a permanent solution to a patient’s problem, they aim to see whether the patient gets temporary relief from the injection in order to see if a long lasting procedure or permanent procedure should be performed. Examples include nerve blocks, sacroiliac joint injections, and discography.

🔷Therapeutic injections are used for long lasting pain relief when the doctor already had a good idea where a patient’s pain is coming from. Examples include epidural injections, radiofrequency ablation, and trigger point injections.

🔷An injection can be considered both diagnostic and therapeutic if it helps reduce the patient’s pain level for an extended period of time AND allows the physician to see where the pain generator is.

Do you know the difference between a herniated/bulging disc and disc degeneration? Here’s a quick run down:
🔹Herniated/bulging disc: A herniated disc is when a disc has partly or completely broken open and the nucleus pulposus is no longer contained in the disc. When the nucleus pulposus leaks out, the jelly-like disc substance can spread out and put pressure on the spinal cord or nerves, and the disc loses some of its ability to be a shock absorber.
🔹 Degenerative disc disease/thinning discs: This occurs when the disc starts to wear out. The disc may shrink, lose its shape, lose its flexibility, wear out or get very thin.
The specialists at treat these disc conditions and others with a wide array of treatment options. If you need treatment for any type of disc condition, give us a call!
