The Violet Solomon Oaklander Foundation is a non-profit corporation created to further the work of Dr. Violet Oaklander, eminent child and adolescent psychotherapist, trainer, and author of two books: 'Windows to Our Children' and 'Hidden Treasure.' In October 2003 approximately 20 of Violet's family members and long-time colleagues met in Santa Barbara to discuss various ways of carrying on Violet's work after she retires.

Grab your favorite markers, crayons, and paper! 🖍️ This workshop is a "learning by doing" experience. To truly understand how a child feels when they project their inner world onto a piece of paper, we must be willing to step into that creative process ourselves.

Lynn and Susan will guide us through the creative projective process of the Oaklander Model. You'll have the opportunity for a first-hand experience in making better contact with your own joy, helping you co-create a similar, safe process for the children you serve. 🗺️

Why do some children seem "stuck" in their therapeutic journey? Dr. Violet Oaklander explained that children usually come into therapy for two reasons: difficulty making good contact and a lessened sense of self.

Without a strong sense of self, a child doesn't have the "internal floor" to stand on when emotions get heavy. This workshop is designed to show you exactly how to rebuild that foundation. Through the creative projective process, we learn to help children become more aware, more accepting, and ultimately more self-supportive.

Can joy be the bridge to healing? 🌈 Dr. Violet Oaklander taught us that children often enter therapy because they’ve lost contact with themselves and their environment. When a child is trapped in anxiety or fear, they need a "counter-weight."

In our upcoming workshop, "Helping Children Find Their Joy to Safely Touch Their Pain," Lynn Stadler and Susan Dorn will explore how the experience of Joy acts as an antidote to negative introjects. When a child knows they can access joy, they find the courage to face the harder parts of being human. Join us to learn how to co-create this safe harbor for your young clients.

Workshop Description:

The experience of joy can be an antidote to living with negative introjects, anxiety, and fear. Knowing we can have joy gives us the courage to face the harder parts of being human.

Dr. Violet Oaklander explained that children come into therapy for two main reasons: 1) difficulty making good contact with themselves and their environment and 2) a lessened sense of self. Dr. Oaklander emphasized that developing a greater sense of self can happen with play in a safe therapeutic relationship. One way to strengthen our sense of self and increase self-support is to experience emotions, and especially the polarities within the emotional realm.

In this three-hour workshop, we will explore the polarities of joy and pain. We will share ways to help children find and own their joyful experiences so they can bear to touch their pain. Using the creative projective process of the Oaklander Model in this workshop, participants will have the opportunity for first-hand experience with making better contact with their joy, so they can better understand how to co-create a similar process with young people. Bring your favorite drawing tools and paper to explore and learn together.

Participants will leave this workshop having gained:

1) Learning about the steps of the Oaklander Model therapeutic process, the role of the therapist, and the sequence of therapeutic play.

2) Experience with the polarities of joy and pain through a creative projective process often present in the Oaklander Model.

3) Increased understanding about how to help children and adolescents become more aware and accepting of their emotions, and develop external support, and ultimately, self-support through this process.
