Workshop Description:

The experience of joy can be an antidote to living with negative introjects, anxiety, and fear. Knowing we can have joy gives us the courage to face the harder parts of being human.

Dr. Violet Oaklander explained that children come into therapy for two main reasons: 1) difficulty making good contact with themselves and their environment and 2) a lessened sense of self. Dr. Oaklander emphasized that developing a greater sense of self can happen with play in a safe therapeutic relationship. One way to strengthen our sense of self and increase self-support is to experience emotions, and especially the polarities within the emotional realm.

In this three-hour workshop, we will explore the polarities of joy and pain. We will share ways to help children find and own their joyful experiences so they can bear to touch their pain. Using the creative projective process of the Oaklander Model in this workshop, participants will have the opportunity for first-hand experience with making better contact with their joy, so they can better understand how to co-create a similar process with young people. Bring your favorite drawing tools and paper to explore and learn together.

Participants will leave this workshop having gained:

1) Learning about the steps of the Oaklander Model therapeutic process, the role of the therapist, and the sequence of therapeutic play.

2) Experience with the polarities of joy and pain through a creative projective process often present in the Oaklander Model.

3) Increased understanding about how to help children and adolescents become more aware and accepting of their emotions, and develop external support, and ultimately, self-support through this process.

Every tradition continues because people carry it forward.

For our very first VSOF Workshop Series, that bridge is Peter Mortola and Tzveta Misheva-Aleksova.

Peter has trained countless practitioners in Gestalt Play Therapy. Tzveta represents the next generation of VSOF trainers, bringing fresh perspective and dedication.

Together, they’ll guide us through “How to play the Oaklander way” - an approach that’s both timeless and urgently needed in today’s practice.

We’re proud to start here, with them.

Remembering Violet 4 years after her passing:

Violet Oaklander was born April 18, 1927 and died September 21, 2021. Her legacy continues to transform the lives of thousands of mental health professionals and millions of children and adolescents through her two books, the work of those health professionals, and the continuing efforts of the Violet Solomon Oaklander Foundation to promote the Oaklander Model of psychotherapy for children and adolescents.

If you ever sat with a child, a puppet, and a feeling that words couldn’t quite reach - you know how powerful play can be.

In this first VSOF Workshop Series, we’ll practice six playful steps that Violet Oaklander used in her sessions. Steps that turn play into connection, and connection into healing.

With puppets as our medium, you’ll explore:
✨ A structured yet flexible six-step process
✨ How play opens doors across ages and cultures
✨ Practical skills you can take straight into your work

It’s not just theory - you’ll walk away with tools, prompts, and even a pre-publication article that captures Violet’s six steps in her own words.

This October, we begin something new.

For years, the Violet Solomon Oaklander Foundation has worked to carry forward Violet’s legacy. But this fall, we’re taking a new step - one that connects generations, cultures, and communities through hands-on learning.

On October 4, 2025, we launch the first-ever VSOF Workshop Series.
Our President, Peter Mortola, will team up with board member Tzveta Misheva-Aleksova to lead:
“How to play the Oaklander way: Six steps to help play become real using puppets and other media.”

This is more than a workshop. It’s the start of an ongoing series designed to share Violet’s approach across the world - accessible, practical, and rooted in play.

We’d love for you to be part of this beginning.
