Center for Developmental Play and Learning

Center for Developmental Play and Learning DIR/Floortime Services for Children (0-12) While the perspective is comprehensive, the therapy is specific to the child. Stanley Greenspan and Serena Wieder.

The Center for Developmental Play and Learning (CDPL) was created in March 2007 by Co-founders Patricia Marquart, MFT and Jeanne White, MFT with the intention of providing Developmental, Individual-difference, Relationship-based DIR® therapy for families who seek a comprehensive support for their child. CDPL appreciates the individual nature of each child’s profile, capacities and interests, and t

ailors the components of the developmental supports accordingly. The Developmental, Individual-differences, Relationship-based DIR® model was formulated by Drs. Dr. Greenspan was Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at George Washington University Medical School and Chairman of the Interdisciplinary Council on Developmental and Learning Disorders. He was also a founding president of Zero to Three: The National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families. The DIR® model is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach which takes into account the childs feelings, relationships with caregivers, developmental level and individual differences in a childs ability to process and respond to sensory information. It focuses on the childs skills in all developmental areas, including social-emotional functioning, communication, thinking and learning, motor skills, body awareness, and attention. The DIR®/ Floortime approach stands in sharp contrast to earlier therapies that did not address underlying problems or the full range of skills children need to acquire. This approach involves meeting your child at his current developmental level, and building upon his particular set of strengths to help him develop. The approach suggests tuning in to the childs interests and desires in interactions and play to harness the power of his motivation and help him climb the developmental ladder. It also involves tailoring these interactions to the childs individual differences in sensory reactivity, processing and motor planning. DIR®/Floortime Supports Growth in the Following Key Developmental Milestones:

Level 1: Regulation and Shared Attention
Level 2: Relationships, Attachment and Engagement
Level 3: Two-way Purposeful Communication
Level 4: Behavioral Organization: Problem Solving and
Internalization (A Complex Sense of Self)
Level 5: Representational Capacity
Level 6: Representational Differentiation: Building Bridges
Between Ideas and Emotional Thinking

Check out the April 2024 Profectum conference on Speech and Language!

All parents eagerly await their child’s first words. Eventually, as children develop more and more language, they share with those around them, who they are becoming. Yet for many children with developmental disorders, communication, language, and speech challenges are pervasive. The absence, late...

Come join me on May 24th for a meaningful conversation with one of the world's most beloved neuroscientists, Dr Stephen Porges. His work on the neuroscience of safety and love changed the way I practice and parent. Also feel free to post questions for us here, as I will select some of the questions beforehand. It's free and you can sign up here below.

If you’ve been following me for a while now, you know that I have been on both sides of the diagnostic feedback session. I’ve been the psychologist reviewing evaluation results with parents and I’ve been the parent on the receiving end of evaluation data that confirms what I already knew was u...

Exactly!

We need to import this critical fact into parenting, preschools, childcare, education, and mental health. Co-regulation is noticing, then attuning to a child's or another person's emotional needs and helping them feel better. It's an active process that involves a bunch of trial and error. It's not just staying calm while a child melts down. And it's rocket fuel for future resilience.

As Director of CDPL, I am very proud to be part of the Reiss-Davis Graduate School community! Jeanne White, LMFT

Reiss-Davis Graduate School recognizes the celebration of Library Lovers’ Day this week (February 14), World Day of Social Justice (February 20), a holiday established by the United Nations, and Black History Month.

We asked members of our community to recommend an inspiring book, article, or other publication in light of the Graduate School’s commitments to social justice, cultural humility, inclusion, and diversity. This is Part 2 of our post.

We encourage our friends and followers to post their own recommendations as well.
