Do we call thunderstorms a dysfunction in the weather? It's naturally occurring. Just like the "thought thunderstorms (the many manifestations of ADHD) " of the brilliant high speed ADHD mind. The less you get caught up in your judgements and beliefs about ADHD the less it becomes a problem you need to fix. We make ADHD wrong and it turns into dysfunction. And "dysfunctional thinking." I.e: distractive thoughts that we believe are real and true turn into a "distractive thought experience." Because we are all one thought away from a clean slate. A new experience. And new thinking.

ADHD and sensory overload is not a problem we need to fix. Think of your brilliant ADHD operating system as your Instagram feed. Pictures, videos, and audio hitting you all at once. The ADHD operating system does not have a filter to organize all the data. It can feel overwhelming. In fact we feel it in our body (through a feeling of overwhelm). That feeling of overwhelm is friendly. It's just the perfect design of the system alerting you are temporarily caught to up in the "ADHD house of horrors." It's letting you need to drop your current thinking. To stop identifying with the feeling of overwhelm. This will automatically drop you out of the "ADHD Netflix movie" and will pivot to presence. New thinking on the way. It's a clearing of the sensor overload "cache."

What well meaning therapists and clinicians don't tell us is our mental health and wellbeing is built into us (free from the mechanistic head chatter of our high speed ADHD personal mind). Mental health is our essential nature (underneath the noise of our very busy thought and thinking system). And we are all just one thought away from clarity of mind.

In today's episode I had the honor of speaking with the one and only Dr. Jeffrey Gurian (www.comedymatterstv.com). Dr. Gurian is an ADHD "doer." He shares his brilliant technicolor journey as a physician, award winning comedy writer, best selling author, and mental health advocate.

About Dr. Jeffrey Gurian:

I’m one of the only doctors ( and ADHD sufferers) with a long-standing career in the comedy world. Spent 20 years on the Board of The Assoc for Spirituality and Psychotherapy, 12 years at NYU as a Clinical Prof. in Oral Medicine and Oro-Facial Pain, and 25 years in practice as a Cosmetic Dentist. When I was tested for ADHD the doctor said to me that I must have had to work 10 times as hard as everyone else, which was true. However I managed to graduate at the top half of my class, #54 out of 126 students. I face tremendous confusion and fears but never let them stop me, which is what inspired me to write my Happiness Series of books. I have 8 books now. Five on comedy (one with Chris Rock), and 3 on Happiness, mindset and changing negative thinking to positive thinking.

Emotional "thought turbulence" can hit the ADHD'er like a ton of bricks. Yet we tend to hyperfocus on it. And just like an airliner when it hits "clear air turbulence" (with all it's sophisticated telemetry and warning systems) the pilot knows exactly what to do. Find a smoother flight path. The pilot slows down the plane. We have the same type of system built into us. Our mind's operating system will automatically find a smoother "thought altitude" (if we allow it and pay no mind to it) if we take our hand's off the "thought controls" and let it level out on it's own. As it always does. Intense emotions is our "psychological immune system" way of alerting us that we are going through some heavy "thought weather." When it happens we just let go of the "thought controls." Place no meaning on it (or identify with those nasty thoughts). Is it uncomfortable? Yes. But we always make it through the "thought turbulence." Because you are reading this right now. Out of the "thought clouds." In this present moment.

When we get caught up in the "ADHD house of horrors" we forget where it is really coming from. Thought. Yet when we get really curious and lean into it we finally see the illusion. Thought isn't really alive. It's ghost like. It's an apparition. But because ADHD'ers are "grandmasters" at feeling our thinking it feels real. But it's part of the personal mind's innocent neural gymnastics it play's over and over for us. Once you see the game the brain is playing (innocently) it has nothing on us. We stop identifying with it. And it doesn't effect us anymore. And we pivot to presence. And yes it's that easy. Yet our personal mind will try to convince us otherwise.
