As orthopedic surgeons, we see medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries frequently from mild sprains to complete tears. Understanding their diagnosis, grading, and treatment is key to optimal recovery.

According to Dr Yau:
· Function: The MCL stabilizes the inner knee, guarding against valgus stress.
· Mechanism: Often injured by force to the outer knee or twisting movements.
· Treatment: Most heal with bracing and rehab; surgery is rare, reserved for severe or multi-ligament injuries.

Our role is to guide patients through recovery, rehabilitation, and a safe return to activity, turning injury into an opportunity for stronger, more resilient knees.

Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) Tear Specialist Are you an athlete who participates in contact sports, or jumping and landing? If so, you may be at risk of tearing your MCL. An MCL injury can be sustained during an awkward landing in athletic activities, dirt biking injury or from a tackle in

Not all hip pain resolves with rest and therapy. Severe or persistent tears of the gluteus medius or minimus may require surgical repair.

Dr. Yau often uses a minimally invasive arthroscopic approach:
· Tendon reattachment with suture anchors
· Bursa removal if inflamed
· IT band release to reduce friction and pain

With proper treatment, patients can return to strength and mobility faster.

Gluteus Medius & Minimus Repair Surgeon Are you an athlete who participates in contact or competitive sports? As a hip surgeon, Dr Yau frequently sees femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), especially pincer impingement, in younger, active patients.

This condition often develops gradually. Extra bone along the acetabulum can lead to labral injury and cartilage damage over time, with symptoms that eventually limit movement and performance.

Initial treatment should focus on conservative care, including activity modification and targeted physical therapy. But when symptoms persist or anatomy is a significant factor, acetabuloplasty can be an effective solution. Using minimally invasive techniques, we reshape the acetabular rim to relieve impingement and restore more normal joint mechanics.

With proper patient selection and rehabilitation, many patients experience significant pain relief and a return to activity within months.

Early evaluation is key to protecting long-term hip health.

Acetabuloplasty for Pincer Impingement Surgeon Have you been diagnosed with an abnormality in the hip bone called Femoroacetabular Impingement or FAI? FAI is a condition which causes pain, pinching and eventually damage to the cartilage of the hip. FAI and hip impingement surgeon Dr. Jervis Yau prov...

Your knees rely on something you never think about: articular cartilage.

This smooth tissue lets your joints move effortlessly and absorbs impact with every step you take. But when it wears down from injury, overuse, or aging, it can lead to the following:
• Pain
• Stiffness
• Catching or locking

The challenge? Cartilage doesn’t heal on its own.

Early care can make all the difference in protecting your knee health and staying active.

Hip injuries can occur due to trauma, overuse, or aging. While many hip structures heal naturally, articular cartilage does not regenerate effectively on its own.

Minimally invasive procedures, such as chondroplasty and microfracture, allow orthopedic surgeons like Dr. Yau to preserve and restore damaged cartilage, reducing pain and stiffness while improving joint function. These techniques are especially valuable for patients with cartilage fraying or early degeneration.

Chondroplasty & Hip Microfracture Surgeon Do you have articular cartilage damage from an accident, sports injury or from overuse? Arthroscopic chondroplasty and microfracture is a procedure performed on patients who have articular cartilage injuries without exposed bony surfaces. Hip chonroplasty an...

Rhabdomyolysis can damage your kidneys if untreated.
✅ Early diagnosis & hydration (oral & IV)
✅ Monitor electrolytes
✅ Dialysis if needed

Most cases are reversible! Prevention: gradual training & stay hydrated.

What is Rhabdomyolysis? Rhabdomyolysis is a serious condition that arises from muscle injury. When muscle fibers die because of direct or indirect injury, it releases toxic contents into the blood stream which can lead to pain, weakness, confusion and kidney failure. Your kneecap isn’t just along for the ride!

When it doesn’t track properly in its groove, repeated movements like running, squatting, or stair climbing can lead to pain, swelling, and cartilage wear.

The fix? Strengthen, stretch, and ease into activity instead of going full throttle. Your knees will thank you!
