Volunteer Spotlight: Delphine Dannemiller

Delphine Dannemiller grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, studied psychology in college, and moved to Santa Barbara in 1962 as a newlywed. She has lived here ever since, raising her four children in the community she quickly came to love.

A series of profound losses eventually guided her to Hospice of Santa Barbara. In 1988, her sister’s 22-year-old son died of bone cancer. Delphine traveled to Evanston to support her sister in any way she could – doing laundry, walking the dog, watering plants, and tending to the many small tasks that become overwhelming during such a time. Shortly after she returned home, her neighbor also became terminally ill with cancer. Experiencing these back-to-back losses made Delphine realize how important it was to understand how best to care for families facing similar tragedies.

Delphine immediately began volunteer training in 1988. She deeply valued the knowledge and guidance by Gail Rink throughout the program. In those early years, HSB had only a handful of employees, working out of a small building on Garden or Olive Street near Carrillo. When HSB and VNA later merged, the combined organization moved to an office on Junipero Street.

Delphine remembers the first Serenity House, a small unit with five patient rooms at what is now Valle Verde. After the construction of the current Serenity House, VNA became independent again, and Delphine chose to remain with HSB. Throughout her many years with HSB, she has watched the organization expand its services, adding pet therapy, music and art therapy, poetry, and many other meaningful programs.

Congratulations Mary Wagner, MFT, Bereavement Counselor, for 24 years with Hospice of Santa Barbara!

Since 2002, Mary has been a bereavement counselor here at Hospice of Santa Barbara. Mary began her career in health services in 1996, working as a therapist for a senior psychiatric facility in Visalia. Mary holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in physical education from UCSB, and a master’s degree in counseling from the University of San Francisco. Last year Mary was given the Older Worker of the Year award by the Area Agency on Aging for her counseling work with the elderly. Of her work, Mary says, “I have been honored by the intimacy and honesty my clients have been willing to share with me. They have truly been my teachers in growing as a therapist and as a person.”

Thank you, Mary!

One of the greatest gifts we can give our families is clarity. When your loved ones know your wishes, they can make decisions with confidence instead of doubt. Listening to one another — truly listening — is an act of love. Advance Care Planning opens the door to those meaningful conversations and ensures your voice is heard, even if you cannot speak. Start the conversation and learn how to document your wishes at www.getitdonesb.org.

Many people avoid Advance Care Planning because they think it means having morbid conversations. But what it really means is talking about how you want to be cared for — your comfort, your values, and your voice — if you’re ever unable to speak for yourself. Planning ahead is not giving up hope or dwelling on death; it’s making sure your care reflects who you are and removing the burden of decision making from loved ones. Find clear, simple guidance at www.getitdonesb.org.

When we think about completing an Advance Directive, we often arrive at the same conclusion: “I’ll take care of that later.” But when it comes to your healthcare wishes, “later” can come quicker than expected. Advance Care Planning isn’t something to wait on until there’s an emergency — it’s a journey you can embark on while you’re feeling well and clear-minded. Giving your loved ones guidance now means they won’t have to guess your choices later. If you’ve been meaning to start your Advance Directive, this is your gentle reminder that now is the right time. Become a Hospice Volunteer — Make a Difference When It Matters Most

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and from all segments of the community. Some come to us with a desire to give back to the community or a personal calling to do hospice work. Others have directly benefited from the services of Hospice of Santa Barbara. HSB has a dynamic volunteer program. As part of the Patient Care Services team, Patient Care Volunteers enhance the quality of life of those impacted by a serious illness and their families by providing social, emotional, and practical support.

We are currently recruiting for our upcoming Hospice of Santa Barbara Volunteer Training. This role is ideal for individuals who:
• Are compassionate and dependable
• Are comfortable sitting with serious illness and the unknown
• Want to serve their community in a meaningful way

No prior experience is needed, just compassion, reliability, and a commitment to serving others.
Comprehensive training and ongoing support are provided.

Our next Patient Care Volunteer Training has been scheduled for April 22nd-May 27th, 2026. Training sessions are held on Wednesdays from 12:00-3:00 pm and applicants must attend all six weeks. Applications must be received by March 15th. Apply at https://www.hospiceofsb.org/volunteer.

If you would like more information about volunteer opportunities, call 805-563-8820 or email our Volunteer Services Department at efreebernt@hospiceofsb.org.
