In honor of LPHS having Career Day this month (every Monday), this whole week I will be featuring 10 LPHS Alumni, highlighting what they now do as their career.
From the Class of 1974, Rosemary Ruiz, a Professional Clarinetist, has been playing the clarinet since her days at Temple Elementary School. She went on to play at Sparks Jr. High, then here at LPHS. Band was her favorite class throughout high school and she became more proficient on the Clarinet. In 1973, the LPHS Band was invited to perform in Mexico City. It was a life changing experience for Rosemary. When she returned, she was accepted into a very prestigious program called, The Los Angeles Philharmonic Minority Students Training Program. After graduating from LPHS, Rosemary attended Cal State Fullerton where she got both her Bachelors & Masters in Clarinet Performance. Years later she went to Santa Clara University, where she got her Single Subject Credential in Music. After graduating, she got to study clarinet at Julliard. Rosemary has performed in Hawaii, Victoria Canada, twice for Pope John Paul II & Queen Elizabeth. She's played clarinet on a number of studio recording sessions, including one that was nominated for a Grammy Award. In 1980, she was hired as the band and choir director at Bishop Amat High School. The highlight of her clarinet career was when she performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the LA Philharmonic at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Today, Rosemary Ruiz-Fernandez is married to her husband of 39 years and have 3 kids, 3 grandkids and 1 grandkid on the way. She resides in Santa Clara, Ca. She still performs frequently as a freelance clarinetist and as a vocalist. Due to the pandemic, her last gig was on March 9, 2020.
