Child Passenger Safety Santa Clarita

Child Passenger Safety Santa Clarita Instruction and consultation on correctly using and installing child safety seats. Private appointments and group presentations available.

My name is Karen and I am a Child Passenger Safety Technician servicing the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding areas. I work by appointment, coming to meet you, to help with correct installation and use of your child safety seats. I also do presentations for groups such as Mom's groups, foster agencies, etc. Since 9 out of 10 car seats are used incorrectly and car crashes are the leading cause of accidental death in children, it is important to keep kids as safe as possible when riding in the car! I am the mother of four energetic children and a life long resident of Santa Clarita. My passion from child passenger safety comes from a long career of teaching First Aid classes and quoting "car accidents are the leading cause of accidental death in children". I researched seats and options while waiting for my first child and became certified as a Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) a few years later and then went on to further my education in child passenger safety by taking additional training on transporting children with special needs. My hope is that you will find this page helpful and informative to keep your children, grandchildren, and little friends safe when they ride in the car. If you have questions or want to meet to have your seats checked to make sure you are one of the 10% who are doing it all correct, please contact me to make an appointment. Weekend and weekday appointments are available! Or, if you have a Mom's group or other education based affiliation, you can schedule a group presentation. To set up an appointment, please use the message feature on this page, email at karencpst.gmail.com, or contact me by phone at (661) 212-5121

You can't control the other drivers on the road. This is my van that was hit while I was minding my own business waiting at a signal. A collision happened in the intersection and one of the vehicles from collision hit my van. There were two adults and 5 children. All children, ages 7-9 years old were using properly fitting booster seats with the seatbelt properly routed. Don't wait until it is too late. Even children who are carpooling to summer fun need to still use their booster seats. Appointments are now being booked for the summer.

THIS is why you buckle your kids into their car seats correctly every SINGLE time. Even when they scream because the straps are tight. Even when they complain about the chest clip or being rear facing. We stopped for milk on the way home from preschool yesterday. We were minutes from home. Someone sped through a red light and slammed into us. You never think it will happen to you. My boys escaped without a scratch but the paramedics told me it could have been very different had I not taken the extra 2 minutes to be sure they were buckled correctly. I will be fine, my kids are fine, everything else can be replaced. Sending thanks to God for keeping us safe (along with Honda, Graco & Chicco). -Jenna Casado Rabberman

The majority of booster seats on the market in 2017 can be relied on to provide good safety belt fit for typical 4 to 8 year-olds in almost any vehicle, IIHS evaluations show.

Recall alert! This one is for a popular minivan!

RECALL: 2017-18 Chrysler Pacifica minivan.

Please SHARE with friends who have this minivan!

HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOUR PACIFICA IS RECALLED?

The Pacifica minivan comes in a 7 or 8 seater version - with the difference being the addition of a center seat in the 2nd row on the 8 seater version. The 7-seater version is NOT affected by this recall. The 8-seater version IS affected.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

During testing, Chrysler found that when the seat belt in 2C (center seat in the 2nd row) is in use it can accidentally unbuckle the seat belt for 2D (driver's side seat in the 2nd row). As you can see in the picture, the buckle for 2C is directly on top of (and touching) the buckle for 2D which seems to be how this accidental unbuckling can occur.

WHAT IS THE REMEDY FOR THE RECALL?

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will install a shorter seat belt buckle in 2C, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin October 20, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T54.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IN THE MEANTIME IF YOU HAVE A RECALLED PACIFICA?

If you are using the seat belt in 2C for anything - a car seat, a booster, a big kid or an adult - do not use anything in 2D that needs a seat belt.

Here are some ways to get around this problem if you need to have people in 2C and 2D:

Option #1: Install a car seat in 2C using LATCH, which will allow you to keep 2C's seat belt buckle tucked down and out of the way where it can't do any harm to 2D. Use seat belt or LATCH for whatever you are putting in 2D.

Option #2: Install a car seat in 2D using LATCH. This gets rid of the risk of accidental unbuckling of 2D as you aren't even using the seat belt in 2D! Use seat belt or LATCH for whatever you are putting in 2C.

After yesterday's post about unrestrained passengers injuring others in a crash, I was asked about adults who choose to put their shoulder belt behind their backs, making the seatbelt a lap only belt. This video shows what that would look like in a controlled setting. In reality there may be some sort of side impact which would also cause the seatbelt occupant to move side to side, increasing the injury to other passengers. Besides the safety aspect, in California you could be fined for wearing your seatbelt improperly as our law has a clause about proper use.

We take precautions to buckle ourselves and our kids in. But have you thought about the danger that comes from other unrestrained passengers in the car? Everyone needs to buckle up. Every ride.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released graphic video illustrating the perils of passengers not wearing a seat belt in the back seat.

Good morning and Happy Monday to all. As we start a new week, please take a look at your vehicles seatbelt. Failure to maintain the proper working order of a seatbelt is against the law and not to mention unsafe. Your safety is our upmost concern. Please have a safe and wonderful week.
