The cats of instagram know, January is one of the coldest months, and a time for frugality too. January, anyone?
traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes the importance of keeping warm as part of maintaining health.
Scroll down for how to turn those unused bags of dry beans into a heating pad for your back, belly, shoulders or feet! Also some backstory.
Recently, I had a patient come in with really bad menstrual cramps. I asked if she ever found it helpful to use a heating pad. She adamantly told me she does not like spending money all the time on disposable things, like heating patches. Ah-ha, she needed a reusable option, for cheap! I told her:
Certainly, you can buy a bean bag like this at many shops, but you can make your own no-buy, reusable heating pad, using unwanted socks for small ones, or a pillowcase for larger ones--just fill partway with dry beans, rice, corn, or seeds and tie off the open end! Of course, if handy with sewingprojects, any lovely heat resistant fabric will do, and you can make compartments in it to keep the filling more localized. I like cotton myself, but feel free to check out other fabric options ;)
Once you have made (or bought) your bag-o-beans, microwave for a minute or two and enjoy the warmth. Or, if, like my patient explained was her case, you dont have/use a microwave, put your beanbag in a dry and covered soup pot on the stove. Either way, keep a close eye on it during heating, checking frequently so it does not scorch.
Voila!
