HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

This is the time of year when most people start a new year resolution, decide to focus on changing something in there life in order to start focusing on a new you in the new year. So I want to share a few tips to help make the changes a little more realistic to maintain.

When starting out on a lifestyle change, research goes into most of what and how you decide to proceed. But there’s a lot of misinformation being shared, and we want to make sure you know what’s truth and what’s fiction. Here are a few of the most popularly shared Weight-Loss Myths you can come across.

If you eat fat you will get fat: This isn’t a complete myth, the truth is there are some fats you should absolutely stay away from like trans fat and there are those that should be used sparingly like saturated fats. But there are also good fats – monounsaturated and polyunsaturated - that should be included in a healthy diet. These fats will not only keep you feeling full, they also contain heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids which can lower blood pressure, reduce blood clotting and decrease stroke and heart failure. Examples of good fats: avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil.
Carbs should be eliminated from your diet: There’s a lot of back and forth on this subject, especially when popular diets like paleo and keto are all about low-carb. But there’s a reason carbs are still included on the food pyramid or the new food plate for a well-balanced diet. Carbs are essential to fueling your body and brain. If you tend to have digestive issues I recommend going with gluten-free carb choices. But just like fat, it’s all about what kind of carbs you’re fueling your body with. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables are the ideal ways to provide the necessary intake.
You can exercise the pounds away: When starting on a lifestyle change the immediate thought is to workout for hours on end. But exercising morning, noon and night will leave you exhausted, sore and can cause you to quit before you’ve gotten your habits off the ground. Introducing a fitness routine is just one part of a successful change a well-balanced nutrition plan makes up 80% of a healthy lifestyle change. Working out has a ton of health benefits, but make sure when starting out you’re not overdoing it and you’re taking advice from a professional who will show you how to start safely.
A cheat day is ok. Rewarding yourself every now and then ok. An entire day devoted to pigging out on all the things you’ve avoided is not. Make your “cheats” count by making it one meal or a treat occasionally, as not to derail your progress. When you overdue it one day, the next day will leave you feeling sluggish and you’ll be looking for something to help move you along, which can start a cycle of unhealthy eating. Keep your eyes on the prize and find ways to curb your cravings with healthy alternatives. If you need help figuring it out, ask your trainer.
You need to lose substantial weight to notice health changes. If you’re reasoning for wanting to be healthier has to do with medical issues like high blood pressure, making changes to your diet and starting an exercise routine are the best way to avoid being put on medication or being taken off medication. Studies show you only need to lose 10% of your weight in order to see changes in blood pressure and blood sugar, plus you’ll be lowering your risk for heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

Good morning Friend!

Did you know that October is Mental Health Awareness month. Statistically 1 in 5 adults will suffer from some form of mental illness, 16 million American adults suffer with depression and 42 million live with an anxiety disorder. And due to the COVID pandemic and lockdown those number have been on the rise.

Worldwide, depression is the leading cause of disability and 60% of those who suffer never seek help. Unfortunately, stigma attached to mental health disorders make it hard for those suffering to talk about it and seek the help they need.

While exercise can’t cure all that ails us mentally, it makes a pretty significant impact on our mental health and is worth trying if nothing else but as an outlet for our daily burdens.

Reduces Stress
Our days can be so jammed pack it’s hard not to get stressed about getting everything done that needs to be done. Exercise is one of the best ways to relieve stress. It increases the chemical, norepinephrine, that moderates the brain’s response to stress. Exercise also boosts the body’s capacity to handle existing mental tension.

Endorphin Boost
Endorphins are the reason we feel happy and euphoric and exercise boosts the release of the hormone so much so doctors recommend it for people suffering with depression and anxiety. Research has found it can even alleviate symptoms from those clinically depressed.

Anxiety Relief
The chemicals released (endorphins and norepinephrine to name a couple) help calm the brain and alleviate the anxious feelings. HIIT is a great way to reduce anxiety sensitivity because your brain is focused on the quick paced intervals and keeps the anxious thoughts at bay.

Brain Booster
A strenuous workout session can increase the protein, BDNF, associated with decision making, higher thinking and learning. Studies have also found that cardio creates new brain cells and improves brain performance.

Addiction Control
Those that struggle with mental health issues have an increased rate of addiction but exercise releases dopamine, the reward chemical, that addicts crave. Short sessions can limit dopamine cravings short term and helps aid in recovery.

Sleep Aid
Working out 5 to 6 hours before bed raises your body’s core temperature. When the body temp returns to normal, it signals the body that it’s time to sleep. A moderate workout a few hours before bed can even help people with insomnia sleep. If you’re having a hard time sleeping because of anxious thoughts take a natural sleeping pill and go workout.

In case you haven’t realized exercise is responsible for releasing a lot of chemicals that do a body and brain good. If you’re struggling with mental health try incorporating exercise into your daily routine to boost the release of these chemicals. But don’t be afraid to talk to someone if you’re having a hard time getting into the right state of mind to even start. There are several outlets that can and will help turn things around.

If you are not sure how to get started and your looking for assistance with a health and fitness routine, I’d love to help!
