Eat your greens!
"POWERHOUSE" FOODS
I often cringe when I hear the term "superfoods" because I don't think it's well defined, so I was excited to see this publication defining "powerhouse" foods based on nutrient density. It reported 41 different foods assessed for 17 nutrients weighted for bioavailability. These were the top 10 "powerhouse" foods (as they were called), with watercress in the lead.
Very interesting because in another publication on "anti-depressant foods" by LaChance and Ramsey (2018), watercress also came out first on the list due to its nutrient content. All in all, I support eating a colorful array of foods; however, as you can see here, when you need nutrient density overall, GREEN is the color to follow! They are rich in folates, vitamin K1, carotenoids, and minerals like magnesium and potassium.
