Ayurvedic tips to reducing stress for good nights sleep!
Sleep helps us digest our life experiences, physically, emotionally and spiritually. When we don’t get enough sleep, or quality sleep, our bodies don’t get the chance to release stress, rest, and rejuvenate. Preparing the mind and body for rest can assure that we get the most out of our time for sleep. This starts with practicing daily and nightly rituals for a restful state.
- Reduce stress and feel your feelings
Why? When we are less stressed throughout the day, we can feel our emotions, share our feelings, and connect with our bodies. This means there’s less unprocessed, unclear material to for our bodies to sort out at night once we take time to slow down.
How? Notice what in your life is currently bringing you stress, change the way you interact with it and your go-to stress response. When you’re feeling stressed, without judgement, allow yourself to focus on your breath for a moment and come back to the situation from a more grounded perspective. Without judgement, talk to your body, let the discomfort speak, listen and notice what the tension or stress has to share. Try noticing or journaling the things in your life that bring you stress, the things in your life that bring you joy, and ways to lessen the time you spend doing what brings you stress and use more time doing what you love.
- Go to sleep by 10 pm and wake by 6 am
Why? 10pm is when the body begins restoring tissue and detoxifying. If you are awake during this time, your body will not be able to properly execute these functions.
- Don’t eat at least 3 hours before going to sleep
Why? Our digestive system needs time to rest too.
- Let go of watching light emitting electronic devices at least 1 hour before sleep
Why? The light from screens surpasses melatonin production, hindering our circadian rhythm.
- Practice something slow, quiet, and relaxing that you enjoy 15 minutes before sleep
Why? Stretching, journaling, gazing at the stars, or listening to your breath meditatively can set up the mind and body to enter a state of rest easily
