Candle gazing, or gazing at a ghee lamp, is a traditional Ayurvedic practice used to strengthen and clarify the eyes. Letting your eyes slow down and focusing your gaze is a restful self care practice for eye health.

Find a candle or ghee lamp and set the candle two to three feet away from you, removing your glasses if you have them. Gaze softly at the flame for 2-3 minutes, and do your best to not blink during this time. This will improve the tejas, or "burning flame of pure intelligence", improving eyesight and focus.

Has Ayurveda ever felt restrictive to you?

Lifestyle regimes around diet, schedules, and yoga designed to enhance our natural qualities can begin to feel forceful if not well paced. We understand that there is a lot of guidelines recommended in this holistic system of healthy living, but remember to move with one eye on the inside, listening to your body’s intuition and one eye on the outside, open to receiving what nature has to offer.

Protecting your energy is not about closing off all of your dislikes in the external world, rather it means navigating life with an awareness and discernment that enables you to be your most authentic self. We shower and brush our teeth to keep the body clean, but maintaining cleanliness in the subtle channels of our spirit and aura is less known and practiced. Energetic clearing and protection is key to embodying one's natural state of clarity, presence, and truth.

This week's article dives deep into how to protect and clear your energy. Check it out through our website link in bio.

Quick tips for meal prepping:

- Wash and chop all hardier root vegetables and bulbs (carrots, leeks, fennel, etc) the off day before your work week to store in the fridge for a quick saute

- Prepare spice mixes for your go-to flavorings (kitchari, chai, digestive spice mix, etc.) for smooth cooking

Neem! A natural insect repellent and remedy for bites and stings!

Neem is an antidote to most insect venoms, it contains natural chemical compounds which repels insects.

For healing bites and stings:

Apply neem oil or paste to the skin and leave it for 10-20 minutes before rinsing it off. For neem paste, mix a little neem powder with a little water. For neem oil, find an herbalized oil made by boiling neem leaves in a sesame oil base, not a neem extract or essential oil.

For an insect repellent:

Rub neem oil (not essential oil) onto exposed skin before going on your outdoor adventure to hinder insect bites and stings.

Surya Namaskar--Sun Salutations

Surya Namaskar is a prayer in motion. This movement bows to the divine within others and our solar source.

🙏 When we place our hands at heart center and bow, we connect to our inner sun, our wise spiritual heart, with the outer sun.

Surya is the chief solar deity, a source which can be seen every day. Namaskar means "to bow," to recognize the whole being.

Ayurvedic tips to reducing stress for good nights sleep!

Sleep helps us digest our life experiences, physically, emotionally and spiritually. When we don’t get enough sleep, or quality sleep, our bodies don’t get the chance to release stress, rest, and rejuvenate. Preparing the mind and body for rest can assure that we get the most out of our time for sleep. This starts with practicing daily and nightly rituals for a restful state.

- Reduce stress and feel your feelings
Why? When we are less stressed throughout the day, we can feel our emotions, share our feelings, and connect with our bodies. This means there’s less unprocessed, unclear material to for our bodies to sort out at night once we take time to slow down.

How? Notice what in your life is currently bringing you stress, change the way you interact with it and your go-to stress response. When you’re feeling stressed, without judgement, allow yourself to focus on your breath for a moment and come back to the situation from a more grounded perspective. Without judgement, talk to your body, let the discomfort speak, listen and notice what the tension or stress has to share. Try noticing or journaling the things in your life that bring you stress, the things in your life that bring you joy, and ways to lessen the time you spend doing what brings you stress and use more time doing what you love.

- Go to sleep by 10 pm and wake by 6 am
Why? 10pm is when the body begins restoring tissue and detoxifying. If you are awake during this time, your body will not be able to properly execute these functions.

- Don’t eat at least 3 hours before going to sleep
Why? Our digestive system needs time to rest too.

- Let go of watching light emitting electronic devices at least 1 hour before sleep
Why? The light from screens surpasses melatonin production, hindering our circadian rhythm.

- Practice something slow, quiet, and relaxing that you enjoy 15 minutes before sleep
Why? Stretching, journaling, gazing at the stars, or listening to your breath meditatively can set up the mind and body to enter a state of rest easily

Is your career and quality of moving through the world bringing you fulfillment? In other words, are you living your dharma?

Vitality comes from living our dharma, a Sanskrit word meaning the natural order and duty that occurs with purposeful action. Ayurveda supports the understanding that each person was put on this earth for a unique reason, which is why we all have different innate gifts, desires and inclinations, relating back to the doshas. Deep down each of our soul's knows its purpose, our dharma, but in reality we are caught up with expectations, fears, and distractions that keep us from living it.

In this week's article, learn how moving through stages of the doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, can help you overcome fears and obstacles preventing you from living out your soul's purpose!

Healing can happen as soon as your next meal when you prepare food as medicine. Ayurveda reminds us that the energy infused into our food from seed to plate is felt and transferred into our bodies. This energy is magnified when we consume it, which is why the most important ingredient in any dish is love.

When we eat with full awareness, feeling the energy of our food and body, then we can enjoy digestion of our food and experiences. Eating while watching TV or discussing important issues draws our attention away from our body and food, disconnecting us from the awareness that enables food to heal. It has become too common to be eating in a rush, on the go, at meetings, or while scrolling on a screen. When we take the time and space we need to eat slowly, it can transform our vital energy.

The intention and thoughts we choose while preparing and consuming food is very powerful in creating health. Cooking and eating in a state of gratitude for the abundance we have infuses our food with energy that will uplift us now and thereafter.

A simple intention while cooking: prepare your food as an offering to the divine within you.

A simply prayer before eating: “May this nourish my mind, body, and soul. Thank you”
