Manual Therapy Power 💫
Know a good manual therapist? They are worth their weight in gold. ⭐️ Since I am the current patient, Alison Palic was my lifeline in a time of lateral shifting and acute low back pain. She got me out of a terrible holding pattern that was not letting up on my pinched nerve(s). These are BEFORE and AFTER photos. She helped get me way less shifted, she helped me stand up straight, she helped my disc breathe, she she helped my gait pattern so I could actually have a trailing limb posture (my back leg could go back for a longer stride).
Manual therapy is an especially important part of Physical Therapy / PT + Pilates rehab. The exercise part reinforces good movement patterns. Now you know!

MONKEY for Hamstring Rehab
🐵
Monkey is a calming exercise that really gets you IN your body...until you realize how tight your hamstrings are 😝
There are many benefits of this exercise, but my main goal here is to lengthen my hamstring muscles. Short, weak hamstrings are a risk factor for a hamstring strain. Monkey gets length through the back of the legs and stretches the hamstrings. Going from a flexed to extended position is often a time the hamstrings can get strained while running (in swing phase). While eccentric strengthening is the most important, if the muscles can not straighten all the way, they cannot strengthen throughout their full range of motion.
Add this one (back in) to your Pilates practice! Or come see me to get started on your Pilates rehab journey!

HAMSTRINGS REHAB
Feet in straps stretches your hamstrings actively, while also strengthening eccentrically! It’s all about CONTROL throughout a range of motion.
Eccentric hamstrings training (as opposed to ‘concentric’) has been shown to improve hamstring flexibility, reduce risk of injury & re-injury, is well-established in the medical literature, and is a MUST in hamstrings rehab.
Why eccentrics? This is a topic for another post, but essentially eccentric strengthening (a lengthening contraction) will help strengthen your tissue in a parallel orientation. For muscle tissue, 🦵 the adaption is sarcomeres-in-series, or increase in fascicle length. For tendons, collagen can be laid down in parallel, giving more tensile strength (versus scar tissue that tends to arrange itself in a mixed orientation).
In any case, feet in straps is an excellent beginning stage rehab exercise for hamstrings strains! Its relatively easy and FUN!

OOV EXPLORATION of MOVEMENT
In Oov class today we used theraband to activate muscles and a ball under the foot to add some extra chaos to the sling systems. I encouraged everyone to explore movement with their arms holding the theraband, to find what was most stable, as they either just balanced their foot on the ball, or rolled the ball out in front of them. Everyone utilized a different strategy, as you can see everyone is doing something slightly different. No two bodies are the same.
Client 1️⃣ kept her right elbow on the floor, which facilitated her posterior oblique sling, while she extended and externally rotated her left arm...to activate her anterior oblique sling (her ‘core’).
Client 2️⃣ used both her arms to reach up with slight external rotation. She was using both arms to really activate her front side so give stability to the bent knee.
Client 3️⃣ In the back there preferred to keep both his elbows on the floor (at least the time the photo was snapped) which really activatesd his backside (posterior oblique sling).
Every client utilized a different strategy, and guess what...every client’s posture, strengths/weaknesses, and motor control pathways are different. They all walked out of class feeling better, in their own unique way!
