Happy Hump Day, Imperial Valley! ☀️🌵

We’ve been triple-digit temperatures over the last several days, so this one is long overdue. Exposure to abnormal or prolonged amounts of heat and humidity without relief or adequate fluid intake can cause various types of heat-related illness. Knowing some key facts can save your life ✅🏥

Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness. It occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature: the body’s temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. When heat stroke occurs, the body temperature can rise to 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause permanent disability or death if the person does not receive emergency treatment 🚨🚑

If your symptoms are concerning for heat stroke, call 911 immediately. If you think you may be having a heat-related illness, stop by for medical evaluation and treatment. I’m happy to help! 👨🏻‍⚕️🩺

Summer is here! Kids are on vacation and with that many of them are enrolled in extracurricular activities, including sports. Unfortunately, sometimes this means a bit of head bumping may be happening. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability among children and young adults in the United States. Each year an estimated 1.5 million Americans sustain a TBI” 🧠❗️

When most people think of brain injuries, they immediately think of concussions. But there are many others and in fact, there are three types of brain injuries: traumatic, mild and severe 🤕😵‍💫

Here are some quick facts and tips about concussion, so parents, coaches and teachers know what to do if one happens. If your child or yourself are experiencing symptoms concerning for concussion, stop by for medical evaluation. I’m happy to help! 👨🏻‍⚕️🩺

Pediatric Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin condition common in babies and children. A child with allergies or family members with atopic dermatitis has a higher chance of having atopic dermatitis. Some of the main symptoms are itching, dryness and redness 😣‼️

The goals of treatment are to ease itching and inflammation of the skin, increase moisture and prevent infection. Staying away from triggers is also very important to manage the condition. Fortunately, the majority of cases usually gets better or goes away as a child gets older 👦🏻✅

Wakey Wakey, Imperial Valley! It’s Hump Day! ☀️🌵

“Does my child have asthma?” is probably one of the most common questions parents ask themselves. Many infants and toddlers experience occasional episodes of wheezing caused by respiratory tract infections, but that doesn’t mean they suffer from asthma, a chronic disorder that causes swelling and inflammation of the airways 🫁💨

In addition to wheezing, other important signs and symptoms to look out for include shortness of breath, chest tightness, labored breathing, low energy, and poor feeding. If your child has these symptoms, they should be urgently evaluated ‼️😷

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common causes of vertigo — the sudden sensation that you're spinning or that the inside of your head is spinning.
BPPV causes brief episodes of mild to intense dizziness. It is usually triggered by specific changes in your head's position. This might occur when you tip your head up or down, when you lie down, or when you turn over or sit up in bed 🧠❔

Although BPPV can be bothersome, it's rarely serious except when it increases the chance of falls. You can receive effective treatment for BPPV during a doctor's office visit. In some cases a more thorough work up is needed, which can include blood tests or imaging 🔬🩻

Nosebleeds, also called epistaxis, involve bleeding from the inside of your nose. Many people have occasional nosebleeds, particularly younger children and older adults 👦🏻👴🏼

Although nosebleeds may be scary, they’re generally only a minor annoyance and aren’t dangerous. Frequent nosebleeds are those that occur more than once a week ‼️🩸

Anemia is a problem of not having enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin to carry oxygen to the body’s tissues. Hemoglobin is a protein found in red cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all other organs in the body. Having anemia can cause tiredness, weakness and shortness of breath 🪫

There are many forms of anemia. Each has its own cause. Anemia can be short term or long term. It can range from mild to severe. Anemia can be a warning sign of serious illness ‼️

Treatments for anemia might involve taking supplements or having medical procedures. Eating a healthy diet might prevent some forms of anemia ✅
