How I Became a Vegan
As many of us tend to do, I started worrying at my diet as a teen. I never stuck with anything for very long. A few years ago I gave up. I decided to just eat whatever I wanted. Then the inevitable happened - I gained weight and was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. It appeared to me that the scale just did not know how to go down in weight. I was becoming the same shape as my mother. Then my mother died of diabetes and ill health complications. The last year of her life was spent going to doctors and emergency rooms and staying in bed.
I decided my future would not look like my mother’s past. I started looking around for something which would get me results. I came across the ketogenic diet and tried it. It worked. It gave me the result of weight loss and high cholesterol. I had swopped one problem for another. I am grateful for the Keto movement. From my three months experience with the keto diet, I learned that I could stick to an eating plan. I also learned how little I knew about nutrition.
I dove into Reading, viewing, and learning about nutrition. I read the China Study, How not to Diet, and Your Body in Balance. I watched Cowspiracy, Forks Over Knives, Game Changers and many other documentaries. These all convinced me that deleting animal products from our diet was good for people and the planet. This lifestyle was superior and worth sharing with others.
I became a vegan – cut out all animal products from our diet. My veganism is motivated by my pursuit of optimal health and longevity. Since December of 2018 I learned many other aspects of the vegan world. Animal rights, environmental impacts, and health are now equally important to me and keep me moving forward on this path.
