This has been stuck with us for a while now. There has been much talk about mental health as it was day yesterday, this seems like a great time to talk about this. Sometimes being positive is seen as weak or shying away from the hard. It’s seen as at times pretending the bad is non-existent. Sometimes it’s even said that looking on the bright side, championing positivity and looking for the good in a situation, is toxic.
If you ask us, looking on the good side is harder. It’s easier to see the bad and dwell on it. It’s easier to think about all we don’t have. It’s easier to focus on what others have that we don’t. It’s easier to let the bad shine brighter than the good.
The truth is, being positive in a world that is negative, where there seems to be more bad than good - to choose to find the good - is hard. It’s very hard and it’s a choice. It takes diligence, it takes changing your perspective when new information is provided, it takes letting go and it takes courage. It takes grit to keep looking for the light in the dark.
When we talk about mental health, we sometimes corner the “look on the good side” folks as being a problem. They are not. It’s their way of fighting in a world that is full of bad. It’s how they are managing their lives and mental health and it is 100% okay. They are the people who fight by choosing to look for the good. So to our fighters who are waking up every single day, looking for the good in all situations and focusing on all the right instead of what’s wrong, we see you. You matter too.
