Fall is officially here and we’ll be in this transition for a few weeks.
According to Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems, this is one of two extra-sensitive portals in the year. They’re also times of opportunity.
At the fall and spring equinox, the elements are shifting more than usual, and your body and mind need extra support to make a smooth transition to the next season.
This is a super important time to lean into grounding, vata-soothing practices. It’s also an optimal time to cleanse the body of accumulation from the previous season and fortify yourself for the seasons to come.
These aren’t just “shoulds” (I dislike shoulds!). These are non-negotiables for most of us if we want to feel well.
Here’s a quick guide to help you prioritize:
01: Abhyanga / self oil massage
02: Hot drinks and warm, cooked foods.
🫖Upon waking, drink a large cup of warm water and gently massage your belly in circular, clockwise strokes to encourage elimination.
🍲Enjoy cooked foods such as soups, stews, and sautéed and baked dishes with moisture and ghee or olive oil. Avoid raw foods, such as salads and smoothies.
Sip fresh ginger root, cumin, coriander, and fennel tea to support digestion.
03: Moderate exercise, bundle up outside.
🌳Prioritize Brisk walking & moderate hiking, and fluid movement forms that incorporate breath and movement. Moderate strength-training is also good.
In vata season, it’s best to avoid fast, intense, or heavy exercise.
04: REST more
🛌 Early to bed and early to rise - aim for at least 8 hours. During the day, try 20-minute afternoon cat naps, Yoga nidra anytime for a deep rest and reset. Or simply recline, put your feet up, close your eyes and breath for 10 minutes.
05: Do a cleanse or reset.
