🌞 It’s the dog days of summer, folks!
When the sun's blazing and the temperatures are soaring, it's not just us humans who need to stay hydrated and cool. Our furry friends can suffer from heatstroke, and it can be really serious. But with a little know-how, you can keep your pup safe and sound!

💦 Make sure your dog has access to fresh, cool water. On a hot day, they'll need even more than usual. On the Go?Bring a portable water bottle and a collapsible bowl for walks and outings.

⛱ Throw your dog some shade!
Just like us, dogs can get sunburned and overheated in direct sunlight. If your dog is outside, ensure they have plenty of shady spots to rest in. A tree, an umbrella, or a covered patio can be a lifesaver.

🔥 Beat the heat. Plan your walks for early morning or late evening. Avoid the midday heat!

🐕 Hot pavement can burn your dog's paw pads. If it's too hot for your bare feet, it's too hot for their paws!

🌡 Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes. Temperatures inside a car can rise rapidly, even on a seemingly mild day, turning into a death trap.

🩺 Spotting the Signs:
It's crucial to know the signs of heatstroke in dogs:
Excessive or rapid panting, difficulty breathing, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, wobbly gait or collapse, and bright red gums

If you notice any of these signs, act fast! Get your dog into a cooler environment immediately, apply cool (not cold) water to their body, and contact your vet.

🦨 🐕 WHAT SHOULD YOU DO when your dog is sprayed by a rascally skunk?!?
Mix 4 cups hydrogen peroxide (3%), ¼ cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon Dawn liquid dish soap. Apply the mixture to your dog’s coat, let it sit for 5 minutes, then rinse off thoroughly. Avoid contact with their eyes and mouth.

🔥 Don't make the mixture beforehand or store it in a closed container. The chemical reaction between hydrogen peroxide and baking soda will make the container burst.

🔥 Don't save any unused mixture. It can't be bottled.

🔥 Don't smoke while shampooing — this mixture is flammable.

🤯 FUN FACT
Skunks can spray up to 10 - 15 feet and can spray as many as 6 times in a row without a break!

Since 2004, Dr. Kelly has been treating pets with cancer and promoting whole-body animal wellness. With her experience, she isn’t surprised by much as she continues to use treatment methods that have been proven to work and cutting-edge technology that shows early clinical promise. At Veterinary Cancer Care, not only do we practice effective medicine, but we do so in an atmosphere of respect and love. We see patients in our offices in Santa Fe, NM right off I-25 at the St. Francis exit.
