Canine impactions are unique orthodontic challenges. This particular canine was in the palate, directly behind the roots of the incisors. The most immediate concern of a palatal canine impaction is damage to the roots of the incisors in proximity to it.

My proud record of 43 years of absolutely zero dental problems ended over the weekend with development of significant pain from a cracked 2nd molar. It was interesting experiencing classical symptoms of a tooth in need of a root canal that I learned about in dental school.

Fortunately I’d been hanging out and talking teeth with an endodontist at our kids soccer and flag football games. Dr Palermo got me in and completed a root canal as easily as I could have imagined. Pain is now completely gone and I am grateful.

Bitter”sweet” day to take some braces off! Not too often we get treated to ice cream at work….much appreciated.

Phase 1 Before and After showing alignment of displaced mandibular lateral incisors and correction of a large midline discrepancy.

Early orthodontic treatments, Phase 1, are recommended when children (generally age 6-9) have significant orthodontic problems that are best corrected PRIOR to the eruption of all the permanent teeth. Phase 1 treatments usually last 10-16 months. When Phase 1 is completed, we still plan on a future comprehensive phase (generally between the ages of 11-13), AFTER all the permanent teeth are erupted.

Stated another way….it is NOT always best to wait for all the permanent teeth to erupt before starting braces. Schedule an orthodontic consultation to find out best treatment options and timing for your child.
