Sudden agitation doesn’t appear out of nowhere!

In dementia, agitation is often a response to discomfort, overstimulation, hunger, pain, or confusion about surroundings. When these needs go unnoticed, behaviors escalate.

One effective approach is pattern tracking. Noticing when agitation happens, what came before it, and how the environment looked at that moment often reveals a clear trigger. Small changes, like quieter spaces or regular snack times, can reduce episodes.

Coast Family Home Care focuses on observing daily patterns, allowing caregivers to adjust routines before agitation builds.

Aging Skin Isn’t Just Thinner—It Behaves Differently

As we age, the skin produces less oil, loses elasticity, and becomes slower to repair itself. Many families don’t realize this changes how skin reacts to everyday care.

Minor dryness can quickly turn into cracks, tears, or infections. Seniors may feel constant itching or discomfort that disrupts sleep and daily activities.

Shift from “reactive” to preventive care. Use fragrance-free cleansers, moisturize within 3 minutes after bathing to lock in moisture, and avoid daily full-body washing unless necessary. Pay special attention to lower legs, arms, and hands, where dryness is most severe.

At Coast Family Home Care in Santa Maria CA, we have years of experience helping seniors follow skin routines that protect fragile skin and reduce complications.

Personal Care: The Support Most Families Wait Too Long For

Many families believe personal care is only needed when a senior can no longer live at home. In reality, the need often starts much earlier.

Struggles with bathing, dressing, or toileting can quietly reduce dignity, confidence, and safety. Seniors may avoid these tasks rather than ask for help.

Watch for small signs: skipped showers, wearing the same clothes repeatedly, or fear of falling in the bathroom. Early personal care support helps seniors stay independent longer, not less.

At Coast Family Home Care in California, we have years of experience helping seniors with personal care in ways that protect dignity and respect personal routines.

What a Live-In Caregiver Really Is!

A live-in caregiver provides more than "just an overnight stay." They integrate themselves into the day-to-day life of the family and have the ability to see how a person behaves throughout the whole day - how they sleep, eat, move around, and react emotionally. Because families do not see this through hourly care, they tend to overlook many of the changes happening with a loved one.

Many people are unaware that when a slow decline in health occurs, most times they will start to notice the gradual decline between the times that caregiver visits. Live-In Care has the capability to identify significant issues as they arise and give the family time to intervene.

This type of care model works best for those who want regularity and consistency in their loved one's care versus simply having a scheduled check-in every so often.

When You Realize “Any Help” Isn’t the Same as the Right Help

Typically, families believe that all forms of Home Care are the same, but it is only once the Home Care service begins, and care has commenced that the difference becomes evident.

When you have your loved one at home, it is common to have caregivers who are not very attentive or take too long in their attempts to care for your family member. Some of them adhere to a fixed schedule which may conflict with what your loved one needs, and after an extended period of time, caregivers become frustrated and cannot help the family at all.

At Coast Family Home Care, located in California, we often meet families who come to us after realizing that care needs to adjust to the person, not the other way around.

Chronic illness doesn’t come with days off

Managing chronic illness goes way beyond going to your doctor. Managing chronic illnesses means managing your symptoms for the rest of your life.

People experience:

-fatigue that comes on unexpectedly
-pain that can vary on a daily basis
-medications causing changes in mood and/or appetite
-mornings that feel great, followed by terrible afternoons

Having a consistent routine, consistent pace and consistent support are the best ingredients for helping you cope with chronic illness. The more stable you remain the fewer flare-ups you will experience and the more predictable your symptoms will be.

At Coast Family Home Care in California, we focus on daily rhythms — meals, rest, movement, and medication timing — because small daily structure makes chronic illness more manageable.

Simple grooming tasks can feel overwhelming...

Brushing hair, shaving, or trimming nails may seem small, but they’re easy to avoid when strength or coordination decline.

Skipping grooming affects skin, posture, and personal comfort — and like many things, it becomes harder over time if it’s not addressed early.

Breaking grooming into smaller, supported steps, using stabilizing grips, and pacing each task reduces discomfort and keeps people feeling like themselves.

At Coast Family Home Care in California, caregivers assist with these daily routines in ways that respect comfort and safety.

Medication timing has a significant impact on a person's daily life.

Skipping a dose is not only a forgotten pill but also affects the patient's health, mood, and energy levels.

It can be challenging for older adults to manage their medications, resulting in missed doses, taking too much medication, or taking their medications at a time that is not correct. The effect of this can be compounded by worsening one's symptoms or increasing the potential for side effects.

Creating simple routines can help provide the structure your loved one needs to consistently take their medications, such as using clear organizers to hold their pills, pairing them with activities they do each day, and having reminders to take them.

With assistance from Coast Family Home Care caregivers in California, a patient's caregivers can ensure that all medication is being taken in accordance with established routines and at the right time.

Living in Fear of Falling Relinquishes Your Control

When an individual stops moving out of a fear of falling from balance, their world continues to shrink.

Individuals with osteoporosis understand that fear is a reality; a fall may result in months of pain and/or surgery. Consequently, these individuals will tend to identify shorter and shorter distances they can walk, tend to avoid stairs, rushing through daily tasks to try and avoid falling. This behaviour decreases the strength of the individual's muscles, reduces their ability to maintain balance, and places the individual at an increasing risk for falling.

The best strategy to prevent falls is to alter/make changes to the way the body functions; not by "being careful". By performing simple exercises every day to improve balance and strengthen the individual's core and leg muscles, as well as retraining the individual how to get up from a seated position (for example) is much better at preventing falls than the act of resting.

Coast Family Home Care in Santa Maria, CA allow for these positive behaviours to be performed every day in a safe manner. Depending on the specific needs of the individual, the caregiver will provide guidance and observations, as well as assist and correct small mistakes that can lead to the individual falling.

The process of healing after an operation is long and does not occur immediately or with little effort.

Wound healing is a process in which a person must adhere to established routines for taking medications and watching for symptoms of pain and inflammation, following the advice of a trained caregiver who is familiar with how to care for wounds during recovery.

For optimal recovery after surgery or injury, a caregiver should monitor the healing process and offer assistance to establish and develop a personal mobility plan. In conjunction with caregivers, it is critical that caregivers continue to monitor and support patients' recovery, as well as show progress as outlined by the staff.

Dressing yourself shouldn't drain your energy or create anxiety for you as a senior citizen.

Dressing can be difficult for seniors due to restricted range of motion caused by things like arthritis or simply being stiff; that makes putting on socks, buttons, and shoes pain, and tiring.

Many people have given up on looking their best, stopped practicing good hygiene, or do not go out much these days.

When the different steps involved with getting dressed are broken down into smaller parts, including laying out your clothes, assisting in moving properly, and moving safely throughout each stage; these methods allow seniors to return to being independent when it comes to dressing themselves again by using adaptive methods rather than putting in the effort.

Coast Family Home Care in California provides personal care to ensure that clients remain comfortable and safe in carrying out everyday activities associated with personal hygiene and getting dressed.

Asking the Same Question Again Isn’t Always About Being Stubborn!

When a person with dementia keeps asking the same question over and over, it is not because they are being defiant or obstinate.

Because of memory loss, the brain cannot capture new information. Therefore, anxiety, confusion, and frustration can arise for both the individual suffering from dementia as well as the family member caring for him/her. Providing them with constant corrections does not help but adds additional distress to the already difficult situation.

In order to be successful, you have to modify your responses to their questions rather than modify the questions. Instead of providing detailed explanations, provide calm reassurances, provide very short answers, and use written notes or visual cues located close to the caregiver will greatly decrease the caregiver's anxiety level.

At Coast Family Home Care, caregivers are trained to respond to the individual with dementia in ways that reduce rather than increase anxiety levels. Daily routines and the use of familiar responses help make the caregiving environment more comfortable for an individual with dementia.
