No matter how long it’s been, these unexpected moments of grief are expected. And when one of these moments find you, instead of tucking it away, sit with it, feel the feelings & remember your baby. Light a candle, cry, journal, scream, reach out, read a poem, listen to a song, anything that allows you to honor your grief.

October is National Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month. The death of a child during pregnancy, at birth or early infancy, is an unimaginable loss; grief that is often not acknowledged or spoken of.

The loss happens in a moment, but the grief is lifelong. Many think that grief decreases over time when in reality, grief is something you learn to live with. Talking about your grief & sharing your story in individual and/or group therapy, the path of healing can begin.

My heart holds space for each of you who grieves your baby.

We have navigated the countless challenges of this pandemic & continue to do so, while still processing the collective trauma of the past 18 months.

The long awaited transition back to school in person and busy calendars of activities & social plans. Even positive changes are stressful. Juggling too much, families are overwhelmed.

Create space & time for quiet, rest, play, & connection.

Reflecting on the 20th anniversary of 9/11, I think of the stories of grief, resilience & hope. I think of the children whose fathers died that day & the mothers who raised their children without their partners. Their grit, courage & perseverance.

Generation 9/11 is a documentary that features 7 children who lost their fathers that day. Visit to find out when it’s airing on your local station.

This time of year can be bittersweet for us as parents & our kids. As summer is ending and we prepare for another school year during this pandemic, my family is soaking up these last weeks with quality time with our annual camping trip.

Without screens, demands or responsibilities, just being in nature with the sounds of the ocean, the beauty of open trails & a sky full of stars.

Wanting to hold onto summer & at the same time, looking forward to the structure & predictability that school brings. While we love spending time together, we’re ready for some space, spending time with friends & excited to settle into a new routine.

However you & your family are enjoying the last sliver of summer, may you hold on to meaningful rituals sparked by this pandemic & embrace the school year of new beginnings & adventures.

July is Minority Mental Health Month in the US. As an Asian American myself, I identify with the need for many to seek support from and with other Asian Americans. As a therapist specializing in perinatal mental health, I searched for resources for Asian moms and was surprised to find doesn’t yet exist.

If you’re looking for support, offers a free bi-monthly online group for South Asian moms & “Like a Mother – A Feminist Journey Through the Science and Culture of Pregnancy” by is a welcome book companion. For other AAPI mental health resources:

“No posting. No liking. Just living.”

Disconnect from distractions, notifications, social media. Reconnect with your self, family & friends, your thoughts & feelings, giving yourself time to see what unfolds.

I’m disconnecting for a few weeks & reconnecting with myself, loved ones, nature, a place of quiet, space to breathe, think, relax & to just be ~ embracing the quiet in mind, body & spirit.

Happy Father’s Day to all dads, granddads, single dads, gay dads, father figures & especially to the father of my boys.

Thank you for your understanding that parenthood is a work in progress, as we learn & grow together. I’m eternally grateful for you as my parenting partner on this journey of raising our boys.

This parenting gig is not easy. For all that you do, for all that you are, I see you & appreciate you.

Graduation, promotion, culmination…’tis the season to mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Not just for our children, but for us as parents.

I am thrilled to experience an in-person celebration for families to gather as a community and see kids being kids. For me, with my youngest son graduating from 5th grade, I am filled with a mix of emotions:

Relieved that this school year is over; impressed by my son’s resilience during pandemic life; hopeful for a summer of relaxation and recovery; excited for his future; and sad to say goodbye to his younger years.

Today’s celebration was both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Opposing emotions can share the same space.

As we close this door & open another, I’ll still be there to hold my son’s hand through whatever life brings.

Reflecting on , this image resonated with me.

There are all different types of families and all should be celebrated.

At the foundation of all families is Love. All parents want to raise happy, kind, compassionate, resilient children. Be who you are. Be who you want to see.

As a therapist and an ally, all families need non-judgmental support and community.

Losing a baby at any point in pregnancy is a profoundly tragic loss. Mothers can experience a range of emotions and mental health struggles.

You cannot spell miscarriage without scar. Although these scars are lifelong, healing takes time, often years. And part of healing is grieving. When moms find meaning in their loss, they can feel more connected to their baby. Rituals can be expressions of love and also mark significant dates or anniversaries. As in this photo, a tangible keepsake can represent the bond between you ~ honoring & remembering this love & in time, finding some peace.

Highlighting mama hero Tandy Parks in honor of

Little did I know how meeting Tandy 16 years ago would change my life. I joined her Mothers Group when my first son was 4 months old, where I found my mama village & began my journey in mindful, conscious parenting.

Tandy’s wisdom in child development, parenting, neuroscience & mindfulness opened my eyes to the parent I wanted to be. Her steady, calm presence has been grounding; her thoughtful questions & observations insightful.

Tandy encouraged me to support moms as a therapist in my private practice & this has given me so much joy ~ to give what I have received. To this day, I’m part of a small group of moms who still meets with Tandy every month or so to talk about anything & everything parenting. Always learning & growing as a parent.

Tandy has been my parenting mentor, my compass ~ when I feel lost or insecure, she has been my guide as I navigate this world as a mom to my 2 boys. A guide to countless moms. A mother mothering mothers. Making this world a better place ~ one mom, one family at a time.

Highlighting mama hero, .

Sonya is a certified yoga therapist, unlike any other. Her journey with yoga began after she was diagnosed with a rare eye disease 30 years ago. Initially she was told that she would be completely blind within 3-7 years.

Feeling lost & terrified of the unknown, Sonya needed a lifeline & that lifeline was yoga. Feeling connected to her body & heart, Sonya’s yoga practice has given her the courage & confidence to live with presence, strength & wisdom. Inspired by the power of yoga, Sonya has dedicated her life to sharing this transformative, healing practice with others.

“Where Sonya lacks eyesight, she brings much insight.” And this is so true, not only in her work, but also in the ways she navigates the world & most especially in the ways she embraces being a mother. I am in awe of her capacity to attune to her daughters’ needs & emotions, to wholly see who they are, & to manage the challenges of family life with compassion, flexibility, grit & grace.

While she may be legally blind, she sees so clearly. Constantly adapting, pushing through & thriving despite discomfort, limitations & losses. Making a difference for so many ~ one breath at a time, one yoga pose at a time. So much respect & gratitude for my friend & my soul sister. Love you, Sonya.

To celebrate , I’d like to spotlight the mama heroes in my life.

And I must start with my mom & my sister.

Born & raised in the Philippines, my mom came from very humble beginnings. Focused on her education, she graduated from college & got her first job in Manila, where she met her future husband. Seeking a better life, my parents immigrated to the US soon after they married. The work of a mother, she said, is the most rewarding & most stressful adventure she’s ever had. It is through her courage, perseverance & quiet strength that my mom built a life of possibilities & opportunities for me & my siblings. And for this, I am forever grateful.

My sister is very much like our mom, in her love for her family & her passion for her work. has a very successful pediatric dental practice, where she finds great joy in building relationships with her patients & their families, watching their personalities & smiles unfold over time. As a mom of 4 active kids, I’ve watched her evolve in her journey to find balance & stay grounded. Inspired by her devotion to her family & the community she serves, striving to live by the simple, yet powerful premise that no smile, deed or act of kindness is too small.

Love & miss you mom & Val.
