There is a FEMA rumor page that is debunking all these crazy conspiracies that are preventing people from getting help. At this point it does not matter who is spreading the rumors. We just have to get the word out.

FACT: $750 is an immediate emergency payment that all applicants get from FEMA right away for groceries, water, heat, blankets etc. It is not all there is and it is not final.

FACT: Depending on the need, applicant may get as much as $42,000 in aide. These are grants and do NOT have to be paid back.

FACT: FEMA is not preventing anyone from evacuating anywhere. If you want to evacuate, then do so. But please listen to local authorities for advisement.

FACT: FEMA is not seizing property. Those are greedy carpetbaggers who are taking advantage of people’s fears.

In most cases when FEMA knows that a disaster is pending, they will deploy resources in advance of the event. So there may be people there ready to help immediately after any crisis.
