🌿 New Research: Cannabis Use in Primary Care Patients 🌿

Exciting new research from UCLA reveals that 1 in 6 primary care patients report cannabis use. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, highlights a crucial need for routine cannabis screening in primary care settings. With 38 states allowing medical cannabis and 24 also permitting recreational use, it’s clear that perceptions and usage patterns are shifting.

Key findings include:

- Most patients use cannabis for symptom management, despite identifying as recreational users.

- Only a few healthcare systems currently offer cannabis screening in primary care.

- The UCLA Health system is leading the way with a universal, electronic health record-based survey to assess cannabis use during pre-appointment check-ins.

Other significant insights:

- Inhaled and ingested cannabis use is nearly equal, with 29% opting for va**ng.

- 47% of users consume cannabis for medical reasons, managing symptoms like mental health issues, stress, sleep problems, and pain.

With these findings, it's essential for healthcare systems to integrate routine cannabis screening, enhancing the identification and documentation of medical cannabis usage. This could greatly improve patient care and symptom management.
