Back to School Series, Part 4: Executive Functioning

Executive functioning = the brain’s ability to self-direct toward a future goal. Kids use these skills every day:
• Working memory
• Sustained attention
• Planning & prioritizing
• Flexibility
• Emotional control

Ways to support at home:
• Create a designated homework space (everything has a “home”)
• Organize papers: keep what’s useful, recycle the rest
• Use visual aids → “What’s the plan? What’s next?”
• Build steady morning/evening routines to reduce stress

When we support executive functioning, kids develop independence, confidence, and resilience. 💙

🎒 Back to School Series, Part 3: Sensory Processing

Ever wonder why your child melts down after school?
Often, it’s connected to sensory processing.

Throughout the day, kids take in constant input through their senses:
👀 Visual | 👂 Auditory | 👅 Gustatory | 👃 Olfactory | ✋ Tactile
⚖️ Vestibular | 💪 Proprioception | 🫀 Interoception

By the time school ends, their nervous system may be overloaded — leading to cognitive fatigue, emotional suppression, or social exhaustion.

After-School Support Tips:
In the car → offer a protein-rich snack, something chewy/crunchy, or ice-cold water with a straw.
At home → create space for quiet downtime, active movement, or connection before placing demands.

✨ Remember: meltdowns aren’t misbehavior — they’re a sign your child’s sensory system is asking for regulation. 💛

Back to School Series, Part 2: Helping Kids with Emotional Regulation ✨🎒

Heading back to school can stir up a lot of big feelings for kids (and parents too!). Emotional regulation is the ability to understand, manage, and respond to emotions in healthy ways—and it’s a skill that can make the transition back to school smoother.

In this post, we’ll cover:

What emotional regulation means

How you can support your child at home

Ways to prepare them for the first day of school

💡 Remember: your regulation supports their regulation. By modeling coping skills, normalizing emotions, and giving kids tools, you’re helping them build lifelong resilience.

✨ Back to School Series, Part 1: Managing Anxiety & Building Resilience 🎒💙

It’s normal for kids to feel anxious about returning to school. Nervousness, stomachaches, clinginess, or avoidance are common signs — and with the right support, kids can build resilience that carries them through challenges.

💡 What helps:
• Keep routines steady
• Model healthy coping skills
• Practice gradual exposure (small steps make a big difference!)
• Use supportive statements → “I see this is hard for you AND I’m confident you can handle it.”

Anxiety isn’t all bad — it can actually be adaptive, helping kids prepare and grow through new experiences. With the right balance of support + confidence, kids learn to manage discomfort and bounce back stronger. 🌟

Want extra support for your child or teen? Start with a Discovery Call with our Clinic Coordinators.
