Alexander Technique Retreats

Alexander Technique Retreats Offering 5-Day Residential Retreats that provide full immersion into the Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique offers a clear, systematic look into the underlying principles that govern human movement. When applied, these principles guide us to a dynamic experience of kinesthetic lightness, wherein thinking becomes clearer, feelings balanced, sensations livelier, and movement more pleasurable. Within this integrated, more conscious condition, we find our actions strengthened and refined, our sense of time expanded, and our rapport with the environment restored. WHAT IT CAN DO FOR YOU
-Reduce tension and stress in everyday activities (walking, cooking, sitting at a computer, driving a car).
-Deepen awareness in specialized activities, such as Yoga, Pilates, and Martial Arts.
-Enhance presentation skills by overcoming fear and stage fright.
-Improve skills in sports (golf, tennis, running, swimming) and performing arts (dancing, singing, acting, playing a musical instrument).
-Learn to relieve chronic pain from lower back syndrome, neck and shoulder tension, runner’s knee, tennis elbow.
-Prevent future injuries.
-Improve posture, coordination, and self-awareness.
-Increase energy and mental clarity

More pictures of our time together...

Our days were filled with gentle work, meaningful conversations, evening charades, games, and so much laughter. From afternoon AT classes to the Gelb Hour, and lingering time with friends — these were the moments where the Work settled in, connections deepened, and everything slowed just enough to really be felt.

✨ Gratitude from the heart ✨

As we look back at our time together at the Alexander Technique Retreat at Serra Retreat Center, our hearts are so full.

Thank you to everyone who came — to those who showed up with curiosity, openness, courage, and a willingness to pause, listen, and explore. Working with the Alexander Technique is such a powerful reminder that we can change our nervous system, reconnect to the present moment, and remember something so simple and so profound: We Have Time...

A huge thank you to our extraordinary teachers — John Baron, Lyn Charlsen-Klein, Lauren Hill, Francis Marsden, Giora Pinkas, and Michael Gelb. Your dedication, wisdom, and love of the Work have shaped these retreats over so many years and made them such a meaningful and transformative experience for everyone who has attended.

And thank you to all of our wonderful participants who joined us for this final retreat at Serra — what a joy it was to share this time, this place, and this Work with you.

We will deeply miss the beauty and serenity that Serra Retreat has offered us over the years — the gardens, the paths, the ocean air, the quiet that holds you. We are so grateful to the Franciscan Friars and to the entire Serra staff for their warmth, generosity, and support throughout all these years.

We look forward to a new year and new offerings! We will be in Tuscany from June 29 to July 4th! Come join us and tell a friend.

Here is what John Baron has to say about our Malibu Retreat...

"Malibu—famous for film stars, beautiful beaches, upscale lifestyle, bronzed surfers, and spectacular ocean views. But this December into the new year, it's also home to something equally transformative: the final Alexander Technique Retreat at Serra Retreat Center.

The Setting
Imagine sitting in the grounds of Serra Retreat's 26-acre showcase gardens, overlooking the Pacific Ocean with the Santa Monica Mountains as your backdrop. The buildings are all original Spanish mission style, creating an atmosphere of ease and peacefulness that invites the work you came to do. But here's what matters: external beauty alone doesn't guarantee inner peace. That's where the Alexander Technique comes in.

Beyond Posture
For decades, the Alexander Technique has been associated with good posture—and yes, that's part of it. But it's so much more. F.M. Alexander himself wrote: "You translate everything, whether physical or mental or spiritual, into muscular tension." In other words, how you move, breathe, and hold yourself directly shapes how you think and feel.
Over nine years of attending and teaching this retreat, I've witnessed firsthand what happens when people experience this mind-body connection firsthand. It's not theoretical. It's visceral.

The Retreat Experience
This is an intensive—six full days immersed in this work. Yet it's also one of the most joyful experiences imaginable. Teachers of teachers, seasoned practitioners, students who've studied for decades, complete newcomers, and people from every background and country come together. You'll experience small group Alexander Technique classes, individual lessons with master teachers, and morning breath-centered yoga to release stress and rejuvenate both body and mind.

You'll learn how to improve your posture and presence, free your breath and your mind, develop presentational skills, work at your computer with ease—and most importantly, discover how to bring more lightness and spaciousness into your daily life.

Between sessions, there's good food, genuine community, social time, and the famous New Year's Eve concert and celebration.

Why This Year Is Different
This will be the last Malibu Alexander Technique Retreat. That reality makes this 2025/26 gathering something truly special—a final opportunity to experience what makes this retreat legendary.

Who Should Come
Whether you're completely new to the Alexander Technique or have studied for years, whether you're looking for relief from chronic tension, better posture, or a deeper understanding of how your mind and body work together, this retreat offers something. You'll join eight exceptional faculty members, each with 40+ years of teaching experience.

The Bottom Line
The Alexander Technique offers the most life-enhancing experience I know of. Alexander didn't just theorize about the mind-body connection—he spent decades developing a technique that actually gives you the lived experience of it. The Malibu Retreat will give you that experience and so much more.

This is your last chance to be part of this community, in this place, in this way. Don't miss it. Hope to see you there ~ John
