Dear beloved families,
We are devastated by the current wildfire situation, as we are aware that many of you are experiencing the unthinkable in terms of evacuations and loss of your homes. Our hearts are with you all.
We also hope you and your loved ones are staying safe. We understand how stressful and uncertain this time can be, and we want to share some practical tips to help you stay prepared and protect your health:
• Ensure you have the medications you need. Double-check that your prescriptions are filled and easily accessible.
• Prepare “go bags” for your family. With the fire not yet contained and winds remaining high, it’s important to be ready to leave quickly. Include water, medications, important documents, and comfort items like your children’s favorite loveys or toys, formula for babies, pack and play for safe sleep, to name a few.
• Stay indoors as much as possible. The air quality is currently unsafe to breathe. If you need to go outside, wear a high-quality mask (e.g., N95) to protect your lungs.
• If you or your children tend to wheeze, start your medications early. Be proactive with inhalers or other respiratory treatments to avoid complications. If your child has an inhaled steroid (corticosteroid inhaler such as Qvar or Flovent), start those right away, and double the dose that you would give typically. Call us if you have questions or need refills.
• Drink plenty of water. The air is extremely dry, and staying hydrated can help your body cope.
• Limit children’s exposure to news coverage. Watching flames repeatedly on TV can increase anxiety and stress for kids. Keep them engaged with calming activities instead, whenever possible.
We are here to support you during this challenging time. If you have any medical concerns or need assistance with prescriptions, don’t hesitate to contact us. Your health and safety remain our top priorities.
Take care, and please stay safe,
Morningside Pediatrics
