I had the pleasure of presenting to the OB GYN Department and Department Chair, Dr. Angela Nishio on the topics of Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorders, Stillbirth, Infant Death and Physician Self Care. I included mindfulness and self compassion. I let them know that they are the most important person in the room when they have to tell a woman “there is no heartbeat” - that the words they use, the facial expressions, the body language will be seared in a woman’s memory for the rest of her life. They have the ability to mitigate the long term possible detrimental mental health outcomes and reduce trauma symptoms by simply dropping into their heart space at one of the most unfathomable moments of their patients life. Doctors are trained to deliver bad news and diagnoses - however not trained to hold emotional space for the woman’s emotional reaction to the news. Offering empathy and compassion is essential, as is giving referrals for psychological support as soon as possible - another critical intervention to help provide order in the chaos of an out of order death and life event.
