Drama Therapy with Adolescents

This course explores how drama therapy and other expressive arts therapy techniques can be utilized in the treatment of adolescents. Participants will be introduced to drama and expressive arts interventions for some common presenting issues among adolescents, such as anxiety, depression, exploration and formation of identity, and challenges associated with both peer and adult relationships. Relevant research findings, theoretical orientations, and case examples will be discussed.

Through experiential exercises using projective tools and embodied expressions, participants will explore practical and potential applications of drama and other expressive arts in assisting adolescent clients in developing emotion regulation skills, adaptive coping, and pro-social skills while cultivating a healthy self-image.

This workshop delves into the intersections of abolitionist principles and drama therapy. Participants will explore how entrenched carceral logics pervade social institutions and professional practices, challenging drama therapists to envision, redefine, and enact new concepts of freedom and justice. The workshop will introduce participants to the wealth of existing literature, research, and multimedia resources, including the Drama Therapy in Prison Archives available for their educational and clinical practice. Attendees will engage in discussions and experiential exercises designed to foster critical consciousness, equipping them with the tools to advocate for community-based approaches and holistic well-being, thereby contributing to a more equitable and just society.

This course will examine how people develop and change throughout the lifespan, from conception to old age. We will explore the development of human behavior, thought, emotion, and relationships, with a focus on the prenatal, childhood, and adolescent stages when most of these changes take place. The course will cover classic theories of child development and newer approaches based on neuroscience, gene-environment interactions, and contextual and sociocultural influences on development. We will also address important topics such as the nature-nurture debate, biological and social perspectives on psychopathology, and neurodiversity-based approaches to atypical development. Participants will learn about developmental psychology through a combination of theory, experiential exercises, relevant videos, assignments, and creative methods designed for self-reflection and discovery.

Participants will learn about the history and current practices of drama therapy with vulnerable populations, focusing on research ethics. The workshop will cover ethical guidelines for research with vulnerable populations, requirements for conducting research with human subjects, necessary permissions, and the use of disclosure forms. Understanding procedures involving IRB’s as well as guidelines to attending to intersectional identities in therapeutic and educational encounters will be explored. APA and NADTA code of Ethics, will be reviewed. In connection with research, participants will learn about the uniqueness of narrative reauthoring, Narradrama research, and the use of narrative questions which will be useful in assessing new identities, and studying of other relevant variables.

Participants will examine current research practices, both practice and evidence based. They will review selected drama therapy research papers and identify an area of interest to explore further. Participants will also explore relevant drama therapy and creative arts assessment measures such as Role Playing Test, Six Piece Story Making, Tell a Story, Role Profiles, EPR and Six Keys Model. The course will conclude with a research paper or proposed outline for a Pilot Study.
