Going to great heights to get things done! Loads of this client's things went from, "Where in the house?" to "Warehouse!" If you are in need of off-site storage to get you through a certain time period, work closely with the storage facility to know exactly where your things will be kept, what security measures are in place, if it's temperature controlled, who has access and when (including you), what insurance covers (yours and theirs), and create a shared inventory including photos, descriptions, count, and measurements. Keep an eye on costs so you are not spending more on packing, transport, and storage than would be to buy new. Off-site storage can be a great temporary solution, but for long term zen to your den: Use or Lose! 💛🏡💛

If your 2026 goals include getting your mail, bills, receipts, tax docs, notes, memorabilia, manuals, reference materials, and other papers under control, know that it doesn't have to be an ongoing chore. The entirety of my active files are in this bin, and I'll be done with my end of year clean-out in less time than it takes for the Falcons & Saints to finish one quarter of this game. Candlelight, snacks, & an N.A. beer make it even easier.

This quote is from Kevin Hall, Ph.D., expert in human nutrition, metabolism, obesity, and neuroscience. When I heard him say it during his interview with Rich Roll, I couldn't stop thinking about how applicable it is to whatever we're trying to lose. Body weight, but also the weight of an overstuffed home, overbooked schedule, overflowing inbox, and overfull to-do list. Will be a whole lot easier and more effective to lighten up in all of these areas if we resolve to do things we can keep up long term. Spring cleaning is great, but it's sort of like a fast. As soon as we start consuming afterward the weight comes back. Can stay lean and fit year-round in many aspects if we have practices that work for our lifestyle and the level of effort we can sustain. It just makes sense. Happy New Year, Everyone. Cheers to you and whatever you resolve to do in 2026. 🎉

Santa has his bags, we have ours. Here are glimpses of the toys, clothes, crafts, and other items now heading for donation / disposal from just two half-days helping a fabulous family of five prepare for a move. One of the kids said to me, "We are getting rid of all this stuff, but then on Christmas we are going to get more stuff and the house will fill back up." Something for Santa to consider for all of our households as he makes his list and checks it twice.🎄🎁🌟

Meck Organizing’s own Nancy Meck was recently tapped in a Good Housekeeping article on the color coding bookshelf trend.

“How you arrange your books should be based on how you are using your books and your personal aesthetic. If they are set out mainly for decoration to warm up a space and provide interesting talking points, then color coding could be one option if the consistency or progression of color is visually appealing to you. Some dig it, some think it looks too staged.”

“Worst way to arrange them: Piled up and forgotten in the bottom of a box in the attic or other storage space. Use them or lose them. Their words and pictures do no one any good if they aren’t seen, accessible, and in good condition.”

After you say yes to the dress - and yes to the groom - what's the answer to, "Where do I put this gown?" First, have it professionally cleaned. Then, some choose to hang it (use breathable cotton garment bag if covering it) and some choose to box it (use acid-free paper and acid-free, archival box). The hanging ones often take the position at the far, dark corner of the closet, the boxed ones often get shifted around because the box is too big for a standard shelf and thus gets in the way. Another option is to frame it so it becomes a piece of art to be seen and appreciated on more than just your wedding day. This first photo at our client's is of her grandmother's framed wedding dress along with photos to deepen the connection to the person in addition to The Big Day.
