What if postpartum care wasn’t an afterthought - but a tradition?

In Korea, Sanhujori (산후조리) is a centuries-old practice centered on one belief: how a mother is cared for in the first 21–30+ days shapes her long-term health 🕊️

It’s not rushed.
It’s not optional.
It’s intentional.

It looks like:
– Deep, uninterrupted rest
– Consistent warmth (protecting the body from cold)
– Nutrient-dense healing foods like seaweed soup
– Herbal teas and tonics to restore and replenish
– Hands-on bodywork to support recovery and circulation
– Continuous, expert support so mothers are never left to navigate it alone

At Sanhu House, this philosophy is the foundation of everything we do.

Our doulas are specifically trained in traditional sanhujori practices - bringing together time-honored Korean postpartum care with modern, luxury in-home support 🤍

From belly binding and therapeutic massages, to herbal foot soaks, healing teas, and nourishing meals - every detail is designed to restore, not just help you “get through.”

Because postpartum isn’t just about surviving, it’s about how you heal.

And we believe every mother deserves access to this level of care.

Rooted in tradition. Elevated for modern motherhood.

May is Maternal Mental Health Month.

And the truth is - maternal mental health is not a niche conversation. It is the foundation of how we care for mothers.

1 in 5 women will experience a postpartum mood or anxiety disorder - yet so many are left to navigate it quietly, invisibly.

Not because they are weak. But because modern systems expect resilience without offering restoration.

In traditional care models like sanhujori, support is not something you ask for. It is something you are given. Structured rest. Warmth. Nourishment. Continuous care.

This is what changes outcomes - not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.

At Sanhu House, we believe postpartum care should be preventative, not reactive.

This month - and every month - we advocate for mothers to be supported, seen, and truly cared for.

C-section recovery is harder than most families expect - and it starts before you leave the hospital.

Here’s what we want every c-section mama to know:

- You had major abdominal surgery. Recovery is 4-6 full weeks, minimum.
- Moving early (within 6–12 hours) is one of the most important things you can do
- The gas and constipation situation is real - start stool softeners before you feel like you need them
- You should avoid bending at the waist for 2-3 weeks. Have a plan for who hands you the baby.

If you’re thinking about your postpartum plan before birth - that’s the best time to start. And if you want any help or have any questions, that’s what we’re here for.

Black women make up around 7% of the U.S. population, yet are more than three times as likely to die from pregnancy-related causes.

Behind that statistic is a pattern: higher rates of preeclampsia, cardiovascular complications and chronic conditions like diabetes.

These aren’t isolated risks.

They are the very conditions driving maternal mortality.

And when only 5-6% of OB-GYNs in the U.S. are Black - a number that’s declining - it points to something deeper about how care is delivered, experienced, and accessed.

From our doulas to our care model, we believe it should feel different than this.

Care that listens.
Care that protects.
Care that respects every mother as an individual.

This is why we do the work we do 💛

Postpartum care involves a lot more coordination than most people expect and most of that coordination defaults to the family.

Great doulas are essential. But assembling, vetting, scheduling and managing a team of individual providers while recovering from birth is its own invisible workload.

Sanhu House removes that layer. We do one intake, we make one plan and there’s only one team that manages itself.

Swipe to see what DIY postpartum assembly actually involves and what changes when there’s a system behind it.

It’s Black Maternal Health Week.

Black women in the US are 3x more likely to experience a pregnancy-related death.
They are also more likely to experience complications, be unheard and receive lower quality care.

But the numbers don’t tell the full story.

They don’t capture what it feels like to not be listened to.
To advocate for your own body.
To navigate recovery without the support you deserve.

Care should feel different than this.

We believe in a model where mothers are deeply supported, closely monitored and met with understanding, respect and individualized care. That’s what postpartum care should be.

Insurance is starting to cover doulas - and that matters. But understanding what’s covered, and what you might still need to plan for, is worth knowing before the birth.

A few things to know:
→ Most new insurance benefits cover birth doulas (labor support)
→ Postpartum recovery care is often a separate coverage category
→ Carrot Fertility often covers postpartum care - many families have more than they realize

Sanhu House is a Carrot-approved provider. We help families understand their options, build a postpartum plan, and access the care they’ve already paid for 🤍

We asked new moms to describe the smell of their newborn… and their answers did not disappoint 🤍

- Johnson & Johnson baby wash
- Cozy old pyjamas
- Fresh laundry
- Spit up
- Really sweet milk
- Cheese puffs
- Just fresh… fresh skin, fresh hair, fresh baby

There’s no single way to describe it but somehow, they all feel right 🥹

How would you describe it?

Five questions, one conversation, all before the baby arrives.

Couples who talk through these before birth don’t have easier postpartum recoveries but they do have a shared language, a shared plan and a lot fewer stress-induced outbursts.

If you haven’t had these conversations yet, consider this your sign!

If you want support having these conversations, book a call with us - we can help bring a bit of structure to it 🫶🏽

Nobody really tells you what those first days after birth are actually like. So here’s the version we wish more people shared 🤍

The first two weeks at home are often the most under-supported part of the entire birth experience. And yet, they matter so much.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Ask your nurse what you can take home before you leave the hospital (you’re allowed more than you think and it helps!)

Breastfeeding can be harder, more physical and more emotional than expected at first. That doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. Also, those cramps you feel while nursing? Totally normal, it’s your body doing its job.

Take the stool softeners. Truly.

Let the people around you know that the emotional waves in those early days and weeks are real, normal and largely hormone-driven. You don’t have to “hold it together.”

And most importantly - rest. As much as you can. This isn’t a luxury, it’s recovery.

Save this for later, or share it with someone who might need a little extra support right now 💛
